Explore Selce’s local history along a specific route and discover a landscape with clearly identified protected areas and habitats. The Keltské chodníčky nature trail leads from the Čachovo recreation centre to the Hrádok archaeological site. It is about 5.6 kilometres long and has eight information boards. The starting point, destination and route length provide a clear framework for planning your day; the archaeological destination connects the route with the history of the village.
Cultural history at specific sites
Hrádok is a protected cultural monument, listed under registration number Ss/2192 in the Central Register of Monuments of the Slovak Republic. The site is associated with Roman coins and pieces of jewellery. Thus, the trail’s destination brings together a protected monument and a specific archaeological connection.
Závoz is also home to several historic sites. The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes is located there and was enlarged in the 1950s, after larger statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint Bernadette were acquired. Three stone cellars in Závoz are recognised as war graves. During the Second World War, they served as a refuge for local families.
In the 19th century, Selce’s vernacular architecture included three-room houses built of stone and topped with thatched roofs. Large, two-storey granaries with galleries were derived from anti-Ottoman watchtowers. At the end of the 19th century, women in Selce made so-called Hontian lace. The remains of a medieval church have also been preserved. These varied traces range from building styles and crafts to archaeological and ecclesiastical evidence.
Landscape within the cadastral area
The landscape can also be understood at several levels. Selce’s cadastral area belongs to the Slovenské stredohorie geomorphological unit and lies in the western part of the Krupinská planina. Most of it consists of a moderately dissected inversion hilly landscape. In the Krupinica valley there are floodplain foxtail meadows and wet meadows. The Litava Site of European Importance (SKUEV0036) extends into the southern part of the cadastral area; its total area is 2,629.70 hectares. Thus, the large-scale landform, specific meadow types and a designated Site of European Importance sit alongside one another, though they do not describe the same area.
Recurring traditions and cuisine
The Jánska vatra bonfire is traditionally lit at Stráň and is a recurring custom in Selce. Kutliarsky deň is also a traditional recurring culinary event. It includes a competition to cook Kutlové, a tripe goulash. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these festivals, check the dates in advance for your intended travel period.
Planning a train journey
For train travel planning, it is important to consider the date of the information: a municipal planning document from 2015 noted that Selce had neither a railway line nor a station, and identified Zvolen as the nearest connection to passenger rail services. Check current connections before travelling by train. This will help you plan your journey alongside the cultural and landscape highlights of your stay.
