Čekovce lies east of Krupina in a valley through which the Čekovský potok flows before joining the Krupinica. Here, the landscape and the history of the village can be considered together: the stream helps define the geography, while the village centre contains evidence of architectural and cultural history. For planning your trip, the village offers a clear focus that brings together the valley, historic buildings and a specific cycling route.

Village centre and architectural history

Čekovce has preserved houses with typical features of vernacular architecture from the early 20th century. They form a relatively cohesive group in the centre. Anyone interested in traditional forms of architecture will find not just individual buildings here, but a unified village landscape that serves as a point of reference for cultural history.

The church is also in the centre. The first Holy Mass was celebrated there in autumn 1923; the church tower was completed in 1925. These two dates represent different milestones in the church’s history: the first Mass and the subsequent completion of the tower. This makes it possible to place the development of the church building in its historical context without conflating the two events.

Other notable dates are associated with the village’s memorials. The monument to those who fell in the First World War was erected in 1936. The municipality had already erected a cross in the cemetery in 1895. Together, the two sites show the different ways historical remembrance is woven into the village landscape: as a monument commemorating the fallen and as a cross in the cemetery.

The memorial room tells the story of life and the cultural heritage of the village and its inhabitants. An older house owned by the municipality was renovated and partially reconstructed in 2014. This building work marks a further milestone in the village’s recent history; it sits alongside the older evidence of the past, without the buildings needing to be treated as equivalent.

History, crafts and regional connections

The early history of Čekovce is linked to the provostry of Bzovík. The monastery in Bzovík has a preserved Gothic sacristy that was converted into a chapel. Its fortifications, with corner towers, and a visible moat have also been preserved. This makes Bzovík a distinct point of reference for architectural history, while its connection to the provostry also plays a role in the early history of Čekovce.

Growing hemp was among the historic means of livelihood in Čekovce. In the past, men also practised woodcarving. These describe former activities, not services currently offered to visitors. A personal thread in the village’s history leads to Jozef V. Luňaček: the palaeontologist was born in Čekovce in 1844. While teaching in Krnišov, he began to take an interest in geological research. The village’s history thus brings together past work, craft activities and the life of a scientist who came later.

Exploring Čekovce by bicycle

A cycling route runs from Krupina via Bzovík to Čekovce. The route to Čekovce follows roads and asphalt, as well as field and forest tracks, and is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. Check the route and the described surfaces before setting off. This will help you take the specific route and the recommended types of bicycle into account when planning, rather than focusing only on the destination.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment, this raises a practical question: should your trip focus mainly on the village’s history and architecture, or would you like to combine Čekovce with a cycling route? Both options are based on specific features of the village and can help you shape your travel plans.
