Traditional swinging wells, stone tombstones and churches shape the sights of Horný Tisovník. The village draws attention to folk art associated with Novohrad and to architectural history that can be seen at several specific sites. Two distinct focuses are available for planning a trip: the village’s cultural heritage and a designated longer hike to Zvolen.

Landscape in the Tisovník Valley

Horný Tisovník lies in the northwest of Novohrad, southeast of the Javorie Mountains, in the eastern part of the Krupinská vrchovina and in the Tisovník Valley. Most of the municipal area is covered by woodland. At the same time, historical landscape features with an agricultural and pastoral character have been preserved in Horný Tisovník and its surroundings. These details paint a picture of woodland alongside traces of a traditionally agricultural landscape.

The geological features are also part of the character of the municipal area: it consists of andesitic tuffs and lava flows and has mineral springs. The swinging wells and stone heritage add their own cultural accent. Horný Tisovník can therefore be understood not only through its buildings, but also through its landscape and traditional crafts.

Folk Art in the Old Cemetery

More than 80 stone tombstones have been preserved in the restored old cemetery. The folk tombstones from Horný and Dolný Tisovník were created between 1870 and 1930. They feature plant ornaments, various star and sun motifs, and depictions of birds, insects and human figures. The stone and wooden tombstones of the Lutheran Christians of the Augsburg Confession from both villages are considered the most representative and cohesive expression of Novohrad folk art. Folk stone carving also became established in Horný Tisovník.

An information board in the cemetery introduces Michal Miloslav Laciak (1826–1904), who is buried there. The presentation includes additional information boards, explanatory texts in carved cases, a central area with a main information board, and benches. It is set in natural surroundings on a slope above Horný Tisovník, near the Lutheran church and a bell tower. A memorial room is also dedicated to the folk tombstones of Novohrad.

The preservation of this heritage has also received recognition beyond the village: in 2017, Horný Tisovník received a special award for rediscovering and restoring folk tombstones and for caring for the spiritual heritage of the past. The recognition connects the specific work on the tombstones with the preservation of intangible heritage.

Churches and Bell Towers

The Lutheran church stands on the site of a wooden Lutheran prayer house dating from 1791 and was built in 1867. The Church of Saints Philip and James in the northeast of the village has a different architectural history: originally Gothic, it was completely rebuilt during the Renaissance and remodelled in the Baroque style between 1751 and 1755. The different building phases make the churches distinct stops in local history.

The bell towers can also be distinguished by their architectural features. The masonry bell tower stands on a slope in the central part of the village. It has a square floor plan, rectangular sound openings, smooth façades and a tent roof. The wooden bell tower in Dolný Tisovník has the characteristic open, arcaded Renaissance form of the 17th century. Together with the churches and tombstones, these buildings offer different ways to explore the area’s architectural history.

A Longer Hike to Zvolen

Those wishing to add a designated hike to their stay can follow a two-day route from Horný Tisovník to Zvolen. The route description, published on 27 October 2021, gives the distance as 40 kilometres; the trail passes through several settlements and waypoints. This tour is quite different from the cultural heritage sites concentrated in the village: it connects Horný Tisovník with a longer hiking itinerary to Zvolen.

The route description lists Horný Tisovník as a bus connection. Check the timetable and route and access information before setting out, as conditions can change. This lets you plan the hike as a separate part of your stay without conflating it with the sights in the village.
