Michalová lies in the valley of the Rohozná stream, in an extension of the Brezno Basin. The inhabited area ranges from 585 to 1,195 metres above sea level. The village’s special highlights include industrial heritage, religious buildings and cycling routes.

Heritage between the nature trail and the Calvary

The nature trail in Michalová has six information panels. It connects the area near the church with Luštiareň, the cultural centre and Hrable Street. The stops thus lead to different places and topics within the municipality.

Luštiareň is a national cultural monument and a site of industrial heritage. It was used to extract seeds from cones for forest nurseries and reforestation. Its history also tells of how the forest was used and how seeds were supplied for new stands.

The Calvary offers a different focus. Construction of its chapel began in 2013; in 2014, a Way of the Cross with large stones and bronze plaques for each station was added. The sequence of years shows the chapel and the Way of the Cross as two parts of the complex built at different times.

Blast furnace, church and a painting from Budapest

Michalová’s industrial history dates back to 1795, when a blast furnace was built here. The mining and processing of iron ore continued until 1877. The furnace was dismantled that year due to a shortage of ore.

Material from the former blast furnace was later used in the construction of the parish church, Kostol sv. Štefana Uhorského. The church was completed in 1897. Its main altar features a painting of Saint Stephen of Hungary, painted by Linhard Vilmos in Budapest in 1896—one year before the church building was completed. The site thus brings together the history of ironworking and the furnishings of the later parish church.

Cycling routes with different local highlights

Two cycling routes are described, each with a different focus. The 30-kilometre “Okolo Michalovej na Kabátovú” route passes through Michalová and then along the Rohoznianska jelšina Nature Reserve.

The “Sedlo Burda – Krátke – Bujakovo” route passes through Michalová Brest and continues via the village square and Hrable in Michalová.

Landscape, railway and events

The Rohoznianska jelšina Nature Reserve is nearby, on the road from Michalová to Brezno. It is under the fifth level of protection and is important for its scientific, educational and cultural-educational value. At an altitude of about 570 metres, it is an example of rare mountain alder stands of priority habitat type 91E0.

A railway line runs through Michalová from Brezno via Hálny to Polhorská Polhora. Beyond this point, it becomes a rack railway that runs through extensive coniferous forests to Tisovec. If you plan to include a train journey, check the timetable and operating days in advance.

Dni obce Michalová is a recurring public village festival. The programme includes food, music, markets and exhibitions, as well as public activities for families. At a celebration in 2019, visitors also learned about the history of local handicrafts and watched local masters making wood carvings. The Silvestrovský beh is also a recurring public race; its 25th edition was announced for 2023. If a particular event date is important for your trip, check the dates for that edition in advance.
