In Čierny Balog, different routes explore the themes of forest, local history and landscape: one educational trail covers forestry, another leads from the municipal office to the open-air museum, and viewpoints offer their own highlights. If you are planning a stay, you can consider these themes separately and then decide which discoveries you want to focus on.

Forest history at the Lesnícky skanzen

The Lesnícky skanzen is an open-air museum dedicated to forestry throughout Slovakia. It is located in the Vydrovská dolina near Čierny Balog. The Chodník lesného času runs through the skanzen: an educational trail just under five kilometres long, with 88 stations. They cover the secrets of the forest, the history of forestry and the work of foresters. The trail therefore offers several thematic ways to explore its focus, rather than concentrating on just one aspect of forest history.

The Lesnícky skanzen also includes a replica of a forest chapel and a Symbolický lesnícky cintorín. These named features add further themes associated with the site to its focus on forest history.

A route to the open-air museum

The Náučný chodník históriou a tradíciami obce Čierny Balog starts at the municipal office and leads directly to the Lesnícky skanzen in the Vydrovská dolina. Along the way, it offers a gentle, nature-oriented alternative to the paved main road. This distinguishes it from the Chodník lesného času: the latter runs through the skanzen and focuses on forests and forestry, while the route from the municipal office leads to the open-air museum and, as its name indicates, focuses on the history and traditions of the municipality.

Cultural monuments and architectural history

The parish church in Čierny Balog is dedicated to the Nanebovzatie Panny Márie and was built between 1797 and 1804. Parts of the Čiernohronská úzkokoľajná lesná železnica are also listed as national cultural monuments. These include a railway station building and a narrow-gauge track. The church and railway features thus bring two further specific aspects of local cultural history into focus alongside forest history.

Nature reserve and viewpoints

The Dobročský prales National Nature Reserve lies within the municipality of Čierny Balog, six kilometres south of the settlement of Dobroč. It is at the end of the Brôtovo valley, in the Pod Geraukou area. These location details distinguish its position within the municipality from its more precise location south of the settlement and in the valley.

The wooden Pustý vrch observation tower is eleven metres high and lies above the Komov and Pusté neighbourhoods. Its two viewing platforms are at heights of three and six metres; from there, you can see Čierny Balog and the surrounding countryside. The Urbanov klobúk observation tower offers views of the Nízke Tatry, the Veporské vrchy and Poľana. The two viewpoints therefore also differ in their named destinations: Pustý vrch looks out over the village and its surroundings, while Urbanov klobúk offers views of three geographical regions.

Plan summer activities

During the summer season, Ski Čierny Balog offers hiking and mountain biking. Ski Čierny Balog’s mini farm gives visitors the opportunity to pet and feed sheep and goats. Different conditions apply when planning: hiking and mountain biking are seasonal activities, while the mini farm’s offering may change. Before your trip, check which activities are available during your visit.
