Slaská lies below the Kremnica Mountains. The village is defined by a long, historic centre and the Church of Saint Gallus, which stands on a hill. For a trip focused on architectural history, the church is a natural starting point, but the local details also include chapels, crosses and historic houses. Marked hiking trails also pass through Slaská. Cultural history and hiking therefore offer two distinct focuses when planning a stay.

The church and the village centre

The historic centre forms an elongated square aligned from north to south. The Church of Saint Gallus stands on a slight rise in the southwest of Slaská and dominates the hill above the village. The former rectory is located below the church. The sacred building was constructed in the 15th century in the Gothic style and remodelled in the Renaissance style in the 16th century. The church tower, baptismal font and fortification date from 1654. The church is still used for religious purposes; if you would like to visit it, check access in advance.

Architectural history in details large and small

A chapel stands northeast of the village, higher up. There are around 20 cast-iron crosses in the cemetery, and a wooden cross stands by house number 57. Slaská also has a masonry wayside shrine. These varied forms add further sacred details in the village to the history of the church.

The residential and farm buildings also have distinctive features. These include connected two-storey granaries and a separate two-storey granary. The northern wooden gable of house number 162 has a decorative strip with carved wing-like elements. House number 180–181 has features of a German stone house; its southern section has stucco elements. The group of houses numbered 190, 191, 192, 193 and 198 is distinguished by its gables, decorative features, façade detailing, a niche and distinctive window shapes. Slaská’s architectural history can thus be traced through individual craft details as well as the design of entire houses.

Hiking trails and regional orientation

A marked hiking trail leads from Kopernica through Slaská to Jazierko Slobodné. Check current trail conditions before setting out. For the Hauerland hike, a route description published in 2023 runs from Kremnica to Handlová via Jarabica, Bernardov, Slaská, Kosorín, Janova Lehota, Peklo, Triesky and the saddle below Vysoká. The route is listed as 39 kilometres long, with 1,672 metres of ascent and 1,791 metres of descent. Its difficulty is rated moderate: level 3 on a five-point hiking scale. The hike is listed as taking two days.

A route report from 2023 notes a section on paved roads on the way into Slaská, where the trail was marked for hikers. This specific information applies to the section described; check current conditions before setting out.

Routes north and south from Slaská lead to Kremnica and to other communities in the Kremnický potok valley. If you plan to include Kremnica or places in the valley in your trip, check the current route for getting there in advance. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether local history or a hiking connection will be the main focus of your stay.
