If you choose Kunešov as your destination, you can plan your stay around cultural and historical sights and trails in the Kremnické vrchy. The village lies in the western part of the Kremnické vrchy mountains, on the Kunešovská planina plateau and in the headwaters of the Kopernica stream. When looking for a holiday apartment, your interests are a good starting point: would you mainly like to discover architectural and local history, or set aside time for hiking and cycling? Kunešov brings these themes together locally and offers useful pointers for planning your days.
Churches, Chapels and Local History
The Church of the Archangel Michael is a single-nave building, originally Gothic, dating from around 1400. It was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1766. This means that two distinct historical phases can be seen in one building: its Gothic origins and the later Baroque changes. The church is listed as a national cultural monument in the Central Register of Monuments of Slovakia under number 1244/0.
The village’s history is also commemorated by a plaque in the church. It names 63 residents of Kunešov who were shot near Magurka during the Second World War. The plaque establishes a specific connection between the village and this historical event.
The chapels also each have their own character. A late Classicist wayside chapel dating from the second half of the 19th century stands on the southern edge of Kunešov. A small square chapel stands before Kunešov, at the entrance to Kremnické Bane. Their locations, styles and forms distinguish the two buildings from one another.
Kunešov is an originally German settlement; its first written mention was under the name villa Sankt Michaelis. Another cultural and historical trace leads to lace-making: a state lace-making school was founded in Kunešov in 1912. Together with the religious buildings, this offers a glimpse of different aspects of the village’s history—from its earliest recorded name to the history of its crafts.
Landscape and Hiking
Its location on the Kunešovská planina plateau and in the headwaters of the Kopernica stream provides a landscape setting for getting your bearings. Kunešov offers opportunities for active days spent hiking and enjoying nature. You can start the climb to Bralová rock in Kunešov.
The Cesta hrdinov SNP long-distance trail also passes through Kunešov, along the road to Kremnické Bane. For further orientation, the 17-kilometre Kremnica section is relevant: it runs from Sedlo pod Vysokou, on the western side above Kunešov, into the Kremnica area. Before setting off, it is advisable to check the route and local conditions.
