Kremnické Bane combines a clearly visible mining history with sacred architecture and trails through a mountain landscape. The village lies in a valley in the Kremnica Mountains, at an elevation of 700 to 800 metres above sea level. Its origins lie in a German mining settlement, first mentioned in 1361. This gives you several themes to consider when planning your trip: you can focus on the architecture or explore mining history and landscape together.

Mining History and Protected Heritage

Part of Kremnické Bane was designated a rural heritage conservation zone by Decree No. 1/1994 of the District Office of Žiar nad Hronom. The aim of the designation is to preserve the village’s cultural heritage for the long term. Its mining history also includes a 20-kilometre miners’ water conduit dating from the 15th century, which carries water to the reservoirs of Kremnické Bane. Alongside the trails and buildings, it represents the technical side of historical mining.

Lace-making also shaped the village’s history. During the Austro-Hungarian period, Kremnické Bane became a centre of lace production; in the 1890s, it also had an institutionally organised bobbin-lace school. These two milestones illustrate different aspects of local craftsmanship: the importance of production and its organised teaching.

Church, Chapel and Miners’ Houses

The Kostol sv. Jána Krstiteľa church is a three-nave Gothic building from the second half of the 13th century, originally built as a Romanesque rotunda. Of particular architectural interest is the star-ribbed vault of the rotunda, dating from the 15th century and largely preserved to this day. Anyone interested in architectural history can trace several periods in a single church building here.

The Kaplnka Narodenia Panny Márie chapel tells a different architectural story: originally a Baroque chapel built in 1726, it was remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style in 1910. Inside is a folk-style woodcarving of Saint John of Nepomuk from the 18th century. The village also features a group of one- and two-storey miners’ houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. Hipped roofs and shingle roofing are characteristic features of these houses.

Trails, Views and Traces of Mining

Above the village, next to the Gothic church, is a symbolic centre of Europe. The Trnovník rock, also known as Dornstein, is also near the church. At 990 metres, it is the highest point in the local cadastral area. From Trnovník, views stretch south to Banská Štiavnica and north to the ridge of the Little Fatra.

The Cesta hrdinov SNP hiking trail passes through Kremnické Bane and branches off there towards the Kostol sv. Jána Krstiteľa church. The Po stopách baníckej činnosti Kremnica–Kremnické Bane educational trail system offers another way to explore the region’s mining history. It comprises three main trails and three secondary trails and presents the area’s mining history. Only ruins of the original miners’ houses remain along the educational trail. The two options offer different experiences: one trail leads towards a landmark building, while the educational trail system focuses on mining history. Check local trail conditions before setting out on a hike.

Plan Around Seasonal Events

The village’s events calendar includes recurring events: an annual masked parade takes place during carnival season. The annual Jánska vatra also features traditional goulash, among other things. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific dates and arrangements in advance.

When considering Kremnické Bane as a destination, you have a clear choice: you can focus on the church, chapel and miners’ houses, or combine the village’s history with hiking trails and viewpoints. If you are considering a holiday apartment for your stay, you can start by planning around your own interests.
