Kopernica lies in a narrow, long valley of the Kopernický potok, in the western group of the Kremnické vrchy, and is part of the Kremnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area. The town combines nature and cycling themes with historic buildings from different periods. When choosing a destination, you can weigh the landscape and architectural history side by side.
Forest trails and views
The forests above Kopernica are still criss-crossed by a dense network of paths and trails. This network dates back to intensive mining activity. South of the town is Horná Klapa, a rocky outcrop that serves as a natural viewpoint. It is not unusual to encounter deer in the surrounding forests, though sightings are not guaranteed. Both the trail landscape shaped by mining and the specific viewpoint are therefore part of the nature attractions around Kopernica.
Hiking and cycling
A municipal route list from 2016 names two hiking trails: Kopernica–Lutila–Dolná Klapa–Jazierko Slobodné is locally marked; Kopernica–Slaská–Jazierko Slobodné is listed as a marked hiking trail. Check the signs locally. You can distinguish the routes by their names: Lutila and Dolná Klapa appear in the sequence of the first route, and Slaská in the second; both routes lead to Jazierko Slobodné. This lets you compare in advance which of the named places best suits your hiking plans.
The Pohronsko–kremnický cycling loop is 49 kilometres long, rated SPORT, and suitable for road bikes, trekking bikes and mountain bikes. It runs from Lúčky via Kopernica to Lutila. Above Kopernica, the route climbs another hill and offers views of the surrounding landscape. Different details are therefore relevant when choosing a tour: the named route sequences are central for the hiking trails, while the cycling loop is described by its length, rating and suitable bike types.
Church and surviving architectural styles
The Roman Catholic Church of St Martin the Bishop is the oldest historic building in Kopernica and a Gothic structure dating from the 13th century. The main altar of St Martin dates from 1743 and is designed in the Baroque style. The church thus brings together two distinct periods: its Gothic construction and the Baroque design of the altar. A few typical German houses with galleries have survived in Kopernica to this day, adding further historic architectural forms to the picture of the town’s architectural history.
