A protected giant sequoia, springs in the Richňavská Valley and a historic mining structure on the Hron give Voznica a varied character. Nature, trails and cultural history offer different starting points for planning a stay—from views of a protected area to the history of the mining region.

Landscape and Nature

The Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area extends through the municipality from its southern border to the banks of the Hron. In the eastern part of Voznica, the Kojatín Nature Reserve lies in the Richňavská Valley. It was designated in 1997, covers 68.63 hectares and is subject to the fifth level of protection. In the small-scale protected areas of the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area, volcanic landforms, rock formations created by selective weathering and scree slopes shape the landscape; numerous protected and endangered animal and plant species are also found there. Check the current access conditions before visiting.

A protected giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), planted in 1905, stands near Hájovňa Slavkov in the Richňavská Valley. At the summit of Smrkáčik there is a hikers’ shelter and an information board. Check the condition of this infrastructure on site before planning your route there.

Springs, Hiking and Cycling Routes

The Gabrielka spring lies about four kilometres upstream from Voznica in the Richňavská Valley. There is a wooden shelter with benches at the spring, serving as a rest stop for hikers and cyclists. The Suchá Voznica spring has a different role: it is maintained and serves as a water source on hikes through the long Suchá Voznica Valley. Assess the water’s suitability on site. Gabrielka, with its shelter and benches, is described as a place to rest; Suchá Voznica is relevant as a water source on a hike.

A hiking route links Sedlo Peciny, the Richnavské jazerá, Banište, Kopanice and Kojatín with Voznica. After crossing the border from Kojatín, a blue-marked hiking trail leads to the former Slavkov forester’s lodge. Near the Dedičná štôlňa Jozefa II., a route also begins beyond Voznica, leading to the cross-crowned hill of Smrkáčik. Before setting out, check the local trail markings and conditions.

Cyclists can also find route descriptions for the area around Voznica: a cycling route runs from Žarnovica through Voznica and Rudno nad Hronom, then continues along a green-marked route towards Rudnianska dolina and Uhliská to the approximately four-metre-high Rudniansky vodopád. This is a different kind of trip planning from the hiking routes mentioned above; here too, check the current route on site.

Mining and Building History

The Dedičná štôlňa Jozefa II. opens into the Hron at Voznica. It was built from 1782 to 1878 and, when completed, was the longest mining structure in the world. It still drains the Štiavnica mining district. Its significance therefore extends beyond its location by the river: the structure connects local history with the mining history of the region.

Traces from much earlier times are also part of the historical picture. Archaeological investigations near Bártová in the Richňavská Valley provide evidence of settlement by people of the Lusatian culture between 1220 and 700 BC. In 1075, Voznica is recorded as an important economic and transport centre for the surrounding area, with a toll station or Voznica toll system. The Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria is a late Classicist church dating from 1842; check locally in advance whether a visit during a service is possible.

Culture and Local Events

The regional folk music competition Spievam, spievaš, spievame takes place in Voznica every two years. The Dolinka folk ensemble was founded in Voznica in 1984. The MO SRZ holds fishing competitions for adults and children every year at the Voznica pond. These different cultural and community events cannot all be experienced at the same time: if you plan to travel for an event, confirm its specific dates locally in advance.

Getting There and Getting Around

The R1 expressway runs through the municipality of Voznica; the nearest access point is in Žarnovica. Check current road conditions and the access route before setting out. Since 1969, a reinforced-concrete pedestrian bridge has provided a crossing over the Hron, replacing the former ferry; it continues to serve as a crossing today. Check its condition on site before using it.
