Tekovská Breznica can be explored through three distinct themes: a medieval place of worship, the ruins of Breznica Castle, and geological features in the surrounding area. For planning, it helps to distinguish between them: the church and castle represent local history, while Putikov vŕšok and Sokolia skala draw attention to geology and terrain. There are also trails with different characteristics, including a marked green hiking trail from the railway station and a less steep educational trail to a viewpoint near the castle ruins.

Church and Castle History

The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is the oldest monument in Tekovská Breznica. It was built in the 14th century in the Romanesque style on elevated ground above the municipality. Its location is also one of its notable features: the church stands above the settlement.

Its building history also includes later alterations. An extension enlarged the church in 1912–1913; it underwent extensive reconstruction in 1993. These two dates mark different phases in its building history and add to the account of the original church, built in the 14th century.

Breznica Castle was a relatively large castle above Tekovská Breznica. The Archbishop of Esztergom had it built in the second half of the 13th century. Remains of the walls of the castle core are visible. The ruins are registered as an immovable national cultural monument in the Central Register of the Slovak Monuments Fund under ÚZPF 1273. Together, the construction date, patron and surviving walls provide a specific context for exploring the medieval castle.

Trails and Landscape

The marked green hiking trail to Breznica Castle starts at Tekovská Breznica railway station and passes through the settlement. The educational trail to the ruins is a less steep alternative and leads to a viewpoint near the castle ruins. The options have different points of reference: the educational trail offers a gentler gradient and a viewpoint, while the green trail starts at the railway station and runs through the settlement.

Sokolia skala adds a striking rock formation to the history of the castle and settlement. The rock face is located at 415 metres above sea level, southeast of Tekovská Breznica, above the ruins of Breznica Castle at Tomanovom rígli. Its location connects it directly with the area above the castle ruins; the elevation provides another specific point of reference for understanding the landscape.

Geological Features in the Surrounding Area

Nearby Putikov vŕšok records Slovakia’s most recent volcanic activity and features a volcanic-exhalative channel. This protected natural monument covers 21.06 hectares and was designated in 1996. Here, the geological features form a distinct focus alongside the built monuments.

Putikov vŕšok is also home to Sesame Cave, a 26-metre-long volcanic vent through which volcanic gases escape during an eruption. Its length and function describe the cave as a geological feature, making it a different subject from the visible castle walls or the church’s building history.

Further Historical and Regional Connections

Only the perimeter walls of the square tower remain at Watchtower Luchtov. It probably served as a defensive and signal tower, warning the population and the castle guards. It is worth distinguishing between the surviving architectural feature and the explicitly probable interpretation of its former function.

There is no marked trail to Watchtower Luchtov, making access relatively difficult. Check conditions locally before setting out. This is a different planning situation from the marked green hiking trail and the educational trail to the castle ruins, whose respective features are described above.

The regional protection context is also part of understanding the area: the eastern part of the cadastral territory of Tekovská Breznica lies within the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Banská Štiavnica and the Technical Monuments in its Vicinity. Tekovská Breznica thus brings together local architectural and landscape features with a specifically named regional UNESCO connection.
