The Rock Chapel at Dievčia skala, the ramparts of Zemné valy and the view of the Hron Valley show different sides of Orovnica. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Orovnica, these cultural and historical sites and the landscape can shape the focus of your stay. Religious history, archaeological landforms and a more challenging hike offer different perspectives on the municipality.

The Hron Valley and the slopes of Pohronský Inovec

Most of the municipal area lies on the southeastern slopes of Pohronský Inovec; only a small part is in the Hron Valley. The Hron flows through the area and forms its geographical axis. Its deep, well-defined valley is bounded by the Štiavnické vrchy, Pohronský Inovec, Tríbeč and Vtáčnik mountain ranges, as well as the Žiarska kotlina basin. The slopes and river corridor therefore provide distinct landmarks in Orovnica’s landscape.

Dievčia skala: Rock Chapel and legend

Dievčia skala lies above the main road towards Nová Baňa, less than two kilometres from Orovnica. A small chapel was carved into the rock below the summit in the second half of the 19th century. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands inside, behind a metal grille. Together with the beautiful view of the Hron Valley, the rock and chapel define the character of this place.

A legend known throughout the wider area tells of a girl who saved her brother from forced conscription by jumping from the rock face. A second version says that she freed her beloved in this way. This legendary tale is distinct from the historical pilgrimage tradition: in the 1950s and 1960s, Orovnica residents held Marian devotions at Dievčia skala almost every Sunday during the summer.

Zemné valy: Ramparts and ditches

Zemné valy begin at the 378 m elevation point on the western slope above the banks of the Hron, south of the Orovnica cemetery at Úkolné. The fortification is 1,200 metres long in total. Parallel ramparts and ditches stretch towards Červený kameň as far as Hradiský potok, also known as Orovnický potok. Their location, elevation and extent provide specific reference points that distinguish this site as a landform from the Rock Chapel.

Church and memorial sites

The Roman Catholic Church of St John Bosco (Kostol sv. Jána Boscu) was built in 1935 on the site of an older wooden bell tower. The former bell tower featured decorative painting and biblical scenes, as well as medallions with portraits of saints. The tower’s construction history and decoration are two distinct historical details associated with the same site.

Memorial sites are also part of the local history. The memorial to the fallen partisans, “Pomník padlých partizánov,” in Orovnica has the status of a national cultural monument and memorial site. The “Pamätné miesto SNP s pomníkom” in Orovnica was designated a national cultural monument in 1963. These two sites of remembrance complement the religious sites.

Hike to Veľký Inovec

A more challenging hike leads through the valley of Orovnický potok to the summit of Veľký Inovec, at an elevation of 901 m. It offers a different focus from the cultural sites: here, the route through the valley and the summit destination take centre stage. This makes it easy to choose between cultural and historical sites and a hike of a more challenging nature when planning your visit.
