The Vojšín Educational Trail links two natural monuments and gives Malá Lehota a clear focus for a hike: the route is 10.5 kilometres long, moderately challenging and can be walked in either direction. It also features a geological protected area, a cave with a seasonal closure, church architecture and bagpipe events. For trip planning, you can consider the landscape, culture and event dates separately.
Hiking and Geology
The Vojšín Educational Trail links the Starohutský vodopád National Monument in the cadastral area of Nová Baňa with the Andezitové kamenné more National Natural Monument in the cadastral area of Malá Lehota. The moderately challenging route is 10.5 kilometres long and can be walked in either direction. Eight information boards or stops are located along the trail. When planning your day, the route length and difficulty rating are useful reference points; together, they give a more complete picture than the distance alone.
The Andezitové kamenné more was designated a National Natural Monument in 1975. It covers 1.4 hectares and lies in the cadastral area of Malá Lehota, in the Žarnovica district and the Tribeč Mountains. Its column-like fragments were formed by the disintegration of a lava flow. This geological formation explains the natural monument’s distinctive shape. A viewing shelter provides protection from the elements; a bus shelter is designed in the same style. If you are planning to use these facilities on a specific visit, check their condition locally.
Cave and Seasonal Planning
The Jazvinská Cave, also known as Debnárova Cave, lies near the settlement of Debnárov štál in the municipality of Malá Lehota in the Tribeč Mountains. It extends horizontally for 44 metres through a limestone massif. The cave serves as a winter roost for bats and is closed from the end of October through March. Check local access conditions before planning a cave visit.
Štále, Churches and History
Malá Lehota is one of three rural municipalities in the dispersed settlement area of Nová Baňa. The remote settlement areas there are called štále. The Neoclassical Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary was built in 1820 in Štál Domčeky; its old nave has a barrel vault. A masonry wayside chapel, built around 1955, stands between Štál Adamcovým and Štál Udičkovým. The place names also reflect the dispersed settlement pattern in the names of the individual settlement areas.
Another historical memorial is the monument to the victims of the First and Second World Wars in the local cemetery. It was erected in 1946 and repaired later. The church, wayside chapel and cemetery monument mark different points in time: from the construction of the Neoclassical church, through the building of the chapel, to the commemoration of the victims of both world wars.
Bagpipe Music and Events
The ZETOR 25 CUP is a traditional annual event in Malá Lehota. It centres on races featuring historic Zetor 25 tractors. Check the dates and programme details for the specific edition in advance. Gajdošské fašiangy is considered Slovakia’s oldest bagpipe festival and takes place in Malá Lehota, Veľká Lehota and Jedľové Kostoľany.
An international gathering of bagpipers and bagpipe music is called the “Bagpipes Carnival.” It takes place in Malá Lehota and begins on the last Friday before Ash Wednesday. Its date therefore follows the carnival calendar. When planning, it is worth bearing these different scheduling considerations in mind: for the ZETOR 25 CUP, the date and programme of the specific edition matter; for the Bagpipes Carnival, it is the date that shifts with the calendar.
When to Visit and Finding Accommodation
If you are looking for an apartment for a stay in Malá Lehota, it is best to choose your preferred dates based on your priorities. The seasonal closure of the Jazvinská Cave and changing event dates may be relevant. Then check whether your preferred accommodation is available for those exact travel dates.
