In Kľak, you can plan a stay amid rocky landscapes and local history: the upland plateau in the Vtáčnik Mountains, the nature trail and several memorial sites offer a range of points of interest. This gives you the opportunity to explore both nature and the history of the town during your trip.

Landscape and Natural Monument

Kľak lies on an upland plateau between the valleys of the Kľak and Kláštorský streams. The Vtáčnik State Nature Reserve in Kľak has been in existence since 1966 and covers 193.97 hectares. The upland setting and the protected area provide a distinctive landscape for the surrounding area.

The protected natural monument of Ostrovica lies near Kľak. It consists of three striking rock towers, whose vertical walls are about 30 to 40 metres high. Alongside the nature reserve, this rock formation offers a distinct nature-related point of interest for your stay; the height given is approximate.

Local History and Memorial Sites

Several monuments commemorate different aspects of Kľak’s history. A monument created by J. Hučko in 1959 honours the citizens and partisans who were tortured by fascists. Another monument stands above the communal grave of those who were murdered. Every year, residents lay a wreath at the SNP monument, erected in 1963, to remember the tragic events.

The memorial room in Kľak contains materials commemorating the burning of the town in 1945. The Roman Catholic church is also one of the town’s defining historic buildings: the single-nave structure was built in 1753 in the late Baroque style and is dedicated to Saint Teresa of Ávila.

Nature Trail and Routes

The Kľakovský nature trail opened in 2015. Its themes range from the history of the Slovak National Uprising in the area around Kľak and the events of Bloody Sunday on 21 January 1945 to the history of the forest railway and the formation of the Ostrovica rock formation. The nature trail thus connects local history with the formation of a distinctive natural feature.

The nature trail is 6.3 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of 1.5 hours. It starts in the town centre, can be walked in either direction, is accessible year-round and is described as easy to complete. As trail conditions may change, check them before your visit; the stated walking time also depends on conditions.

Other routes lead from Kľak through Partizánska dolina via Ivanov salaš and Škurátka to Vtáčnik; via Ivanov salaš and Škurátka to the waterfall on Pokutský potok; and via Škurátka, Vtáčnik, Homôlka and Gronštolne to Prochot. The destinations differ: one route leads to Vtáčnik, another to the waterfall and a third continues as far as Prochot. Check trail conditions before setting out.
