Brehy lies on the left bank of the Hron. The village brings together a long pottery tradition, architectural history and a variety of hiking destinations: from a trail about local history to a route to Hulín and a short path to the Calvary.

Pottery traditions and local history

Pottery has a long tradition in Brehy. In 1715, 16 potters are recorded. From the early 18th century until 1918, residents transported earthenware by cart throughout the Kingdom of Hungary. The Hrnčiarske múzeum Brehy (Brehy Pottery Museum) is dedicated to preserving the potter’s house and the original, only functioning pottery kiln in Brehy. It holds public events and leisure activities, as well as creative sessions and workshops, including for children. If you are planning a visit or a workshop, it is advisable to enquire about specific visiting options and dates.

Other traces of different periods contribute to the village’s character. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Joseph the Foster Father was completed and consecrated on November 5, 1786. Brehy also has traditional ribbon development along a stream, dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Landscape and trails with different points of interest

More than 90 percent of the cadastral area of Brehy lies within the Štiavnické vrchy Protected Landscape Area. This includes a small part of the built-up area in the Liešna district. The protected area is subject to the second level of protection.

The trail Zabudnuté pamiatky baníctva v Brehoch combines hiking with an introduction to local history. It is considered easy and is also suitable for families with children. Before setting out, it is worth checking the trail conditions and signage. Another route leads from Brehy to the 650-metre-high Hulín: it is marked yellow and runs through pleasant woodland. The two trails therefore offer different kinds of hiking: local history on the educational trail and a woodland route to Hulín.

The Brehy Calvary is on a small hill below Mount Kaliště in the Laštok district. A narrow path leads there in just a few minutes from the yellow-marked main road; the walk is short and easy. This makes the Calvary an easy-to-reach option alongside the longer hiking destinations.

The Hron and water sports

Lodenica pod Orechmi is a boat storage site in the village of Brehy. OZ Lodenica pod orechmi offers a range of activities, from regular hiking to rafting and kayaking. In cooperation with the Dronte boat rental service, the organisation also arranges the rental of water sports equipment. If you are planning to rent equipment, check the current options in advance.

OZ Lodenica pod orechmi organises the opening and closing of the Hron at the start and end of the water sports season. The Splav netradičných plavidiel (Rafting with Unusual Vessels) usually takes place in August. Check the specific dates in advance when planning your trip.
