A travertine cascade about 500 metres long, a hiking route lasting several hours and memorial sites from different periods define Moštenica. When planning your visit, it is important to distinguish between the natural attractions: Moštenické travertíny is used for recreation, but is not accessible by a hiking trail or nature trail. A separate hiking route starts in the village and leads to Hiadeľské sedlo.
Natural Monument and Landscape
Moštenica lies on the southern slopes of the western part of the Low Tatras. Most of the municipality is forested, and the village is a starting point for reaching the ridge of the Low Tatras. This location gives the natural side of a stay a clear connection to the mountain landscape.
Moštenické travertíny is a protected natural monument in the cadastral area of Moštenica and lies within the protection zone of a national park. The travertine complex forms a cascade about 500 metres long, with six steps at elevations between 650 and 800 metres. An active travertine terrace with five water outlets near Moštenické travertíny is also protected.
The area is used for recreation, but is not accessible by either a hiking trail or a nature trail. If you plan to visit the travertine formations, check local conditions in advance. The mineral spring Moštenická kyslá is also part of the area’s development: a recreational centre grew up around it.
Hiking Route from Moštenica
A hiking trail leads from Moštenica via the Uhliarska Valley, Moštenická Kyslá, Zubová, Hadlanka and Kozí chrbát to Hiadeľské sedlo. The route takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. If the time available for hiking is a key factor in your plans, this tour gives you a specific time frame. It should be distinguished from the travertine area, which is not accessible by a hiking trail or nature trail.
The named waypoints describe the course of the tour. They connect Moštenica with Hiadeľské sedlo and offer a distinct way to focus your stay on hiking. Traditional household activities in Moštenica also included woodworking and linen weaving—another glimpse into local history, distinct from the natural attractions.
Local History and Memorial Sites
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is Neoclassical and was built in 1846–1847. Its main altar features a crucifixion painting by J. B. Klemens, created in 1846. The church’s construction date and altar painting make it a specific point of interest for anyone interested in architecture and religious art.
Another historic building is the former mining office in Moštenica. The Renaissance building was constructed in 1561 and has a U-shaped floor plan. It is also remembered as the site of a military hospital during the Slovak National Uprising. The building’s history and the later memory of how it was used are two distinct historical aspects of the same building.
The history goes back even further: Hradište is a hilltop settlement from the Late and Final Bronze Age. It was probably fortified with a ditch; a cremation grave of the Lusatian culture was also found at Hradište. These archaeological traces differ markedly from the more recent buildings and memorial sites in the village.
The cemetery in Moštenica contains the graves of fallen partisans. A monument to murdered Hungarian soldiers and a civilian victim stands by the former lime kiln. The municipality maintains the memorial sites. Local history therefore ranges from prehistoric settlement traces to memories of the Slovak National Uprising.
