Môlča lies in the northern part of the Zvolenská vrchovina uplands, in the valley of the Môlčiansky potok, with the Malá Môlča as a tributary. East of Môlča lies a 2 km² karst area. The valley and the karst area are two distinct geographical reference points: one describes the village’s location, the other a geological feature to the east.

Karst Landscape, Cave and Mining Workings

Mariana is a short cave with three branches. It lies in the Môlčianska Valley opposite the turn-off to Malá Môlča; its entrance is on the left, below a rock face, in an abandoned quarry.

Na Drienku (Starý Drienok) is an old mining working that partly merges into karst formations. The system is approximately 2 km long; it is difficult to find your way around, there is water, and the entire mining system is unstable. Mariana is therefore the short cave with three branches, whereas Na Drienku is an unstable mining system approximately two kilometres long. For your planning, the difficulty of finding your way, the water and the instability at Na Drienku are all relevant.

Village History and Remembrance

The village’s history goes back to the Middle Ages, but its founding and first written mention should be distinguished. Môlča was founded around 1300 on the estate of Comes Miku, son of Radun. The first written mention of the village dates from 1424, when it was called Mocha. Thus, around 1300 refers to the founding, while 1424 marks the first mention under a different name.

The village bell tower in Môlča is a masonry structure with a square floor plan and a pyramidal roof. A memorial plaque to the victims of the First World War is attached to it. Alongside the medieval dates, the plaque adds another historical layer: it commemorates the victims of the First World War. There are also historic cellars in the village centre. The bell tower is therefore a focal point of remembrance, while the cellars are an additional, distinct historic feature of the centre.

Cycling Route and Dated Event

Cycling Route No. 2 runs from Banská Bystrica via Môlča and Horná Mičiná to Vlkanová and back to Banská Bystrica. Môlča is therefore part of a loop through several places, not its endpoint. The sequence of place names makes the route clear: from Banská Bystrica, it goes via Môlča and Horná Mičiná to Vlkanová, then returns to the starting point.

On 11 and 12 July 2026, the Central European Zone Autocross Championships were held in Môlča. The Slovak, Austrian and Hungarian Autocross Championships, as well as the Slovak-Hungarian Autocross Challenge, were also held there at the same time. A total of 159 local and foreign drivers competed. Unlike the landscape and village features, this was a single, dated event. If you would like to plan your trip around a future edition, check the dates separately.
