Medzibrod can be viewed from two different perspectives: the protected landscapes north of the Hron and the historic buildings in the village. The river runs along the eastern-southern side of Medzibrod; the Vyvieranica and Močiar streams flow into it. The part of the cadastral area north of the Hron belongs to the NAPANT Protected Landscape Area. The Máčková Nature Reserve also lies north of the village. These details distinguish two spatial levels: a part of the cadastral area within a protected landscape area and a separate, named nature reserve.

Nature and landscape around Medzibrod

Máčková covers 42.23 hectares. Numerous pasque flowers grow there, and woodland steppes and near-natural beech forest communities have been preserved. Almost 60 percent of the cadastral area is forested. The lady's slipper is considered a characteristic plant of Medzibrod’s flora and blooms in natural beech forests on limestone. Alongside the named protected areas, this also brings the forest cover and the special conditions for a characteristic plant into focus.

A cycling route passes through Medzibrod and connects the village with Hiadeľ, Brusno and Pohronský Bukovec. These named connections give cyclists specific points of reference for navigation, without specifying a particular stage length or riding time. Check the route before setting out, as route details may change.

Buildings and history

The parish church was built of stone in 1790 and consecrated on 16 May 1791; it was built in the Rococo style. The church contains an organ loft, a mechanical tower clock and three bells. The organ underwent extensive restoration in 2008. The artist Ladislav Cserba made eight stained-glass windows for the church in 2008 and 2009. The building thus reveals both its early construction and consecration history and later details of its furnishings.

The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk commemorates a different historical event. It was built in 1808 as a votive chapel to commemorate the rescue of residents living along the Hron from ice dammed up in the river. A technical landmark is the water tower in Medzibrod, which was used to fill steam locomotives. The church, chapel and water tower represent different ways of approaching local history: architecture, a votive memorial and a technical function.

Local traditions

The Haruľová šou includes a contest for the longest potato peel. The event is an annual September tradition, although individual editions may be cancelled. Teams compete for the Haruľa of the Year, alongside an extensive cultural programme and supporting events. If your trip depends on this festival, check whether it is taking place in the year concerned. This makes it possible to consider the event as a specific reason to travel without assuming that it takes place every year.
