Banská Bystrica can be explored through a range of themes: the Slovak National Uprising, a copper works that operated for a long time, city collections and trails on Urpín. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between urban history, exhibitions and specific walking experiences, rather than trying to fit everything into a single tour.

City history and historic buildings

On 29 August 1944, the Slovak National Uprising was declared in Banská Bystrica as armed resistance against the fascist occupation. The Historic Walking Tour offers a different way to explore the city’s history: it starts at the clock tower on Námestie SNP. On Národná ulica, it takes in the Štátna opera building and Hotel Národný dom. This lets you choose a historical event and the stops on a walking tour as distinct focuses for your exploration.

Industrial history at Medený hámor

Medený hámor operated almost continuously for nearly 500 years, from 1496 to 1991. Today, the site is a technical monument of international significance. It currently comprises four protected structures: “Hiarty”, “Dielne”, “Výrobné haly” with laboratories and electrolysis, and “Vodný náhon”. Its long operational history and the named structures give the site its own place alongside the city’s historical events and buildings. If you are particularly interested in industrial history, Medený hámor is a distinctive theme to explore during your stay.

Exhibitions about the city and region

Thurzov dom is a three-storey burgher’s palace dating from the early 16th century and is now home to the Stredoslovenské múzeum. The permanent exhibition Tranzithistory presents the development and history of the building, the city of Banská Bystrica and the region. The permanent exhibition also displays more than 2,000 collection objects from the fields of archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnology and visual art. At Tihányiovský kaštieľ, the thematically arranged exhibition Príroda stredného Slovenska offers an insight into nature in the Banská Bystrica region through plant and animal exhibits. The exhibitions therefore cover everything from urban and regional history to natural history. Visiting arrangements and exhibition contents may change; check the latest information in advance if a particular visit is important to your plans.

Walking and cycling routes

The Serpentíny Urpín nature trail is 3.6 km long, takes about 2.5 hours and is rated easy to moderate. Check trail conditions before setting out. Banská Bystrica-Mesto railway station is below Urpín, is also known as “Malá stanica”, and is a starting point for the serpentine trail. If you plan to include the station in your journey, check current train services and stopping arrangements in advance.

The Barborská cesta starts and ends in Banská Bystrica and is divided into nine stages. It can be completed on foot or by bicycle. Unlike the Serpentíny Urpín nature trail, the stage structure and the options for walking or cycling are the useful points to consider when planning this route. Check the trail conditions and current circumstances before setting out.

Another historic ensemble

Urpínska kalvária consists of eight stations, a chapel, a church on the hill, a tree-lined avenue and a small monastery. These features make it a distinct cultural and historical destination alongside the museums, the Historic Walking Tour and the trails. Depending on whether you are more interested in architecture, exhibitions, industrial history or outdoor activities, you can choose the focus of your stay accordingly.
