Cultural Heritage and Nature Conservation in Plaisance
Beauvoir Cemetery and the Rosebelle Forest and Nature Trail offer two different perspectives on Plaisance: a named cultural heritage site and a natural area whose preservation is a shared community concern. A district-by-district list of national heritage sites includes Beauvoir Cemetery under Plaisance; the accompanying appendix attributes the list to the Seychelles Heritage Foundation (January 2016). The Rosebelle Forest and Nature Trail is in Upper La Misere, a natural area in the Plaisance district. A community conservation initiative aims to preserve it.
If you are interested in both culture and landscape, these two Plaisance topics offer a concrete starting point. One perspective leads to cultural heritage, the other to the shared task of preserving a natural area.
In the broader destination of the Seychelles
The broader destination of the Seychelles offers further examples of nature, wildlife and cultural experiences. The places have different focuses: from distinctive habitats and species to trails and traces of history.
Nature and Wildlife
On La Digue, Veuve Special Reserve covers 21 hectares and is part of a 200-hectare plateau on the western side of the island. Reserve staff answer questions and help visitors find the birds. For anyone interested in birdwatching, this offers both a specific description of the landscape and guidance from staff.
On Praslin, the National Park is home to endemic, native and indigenous plants, as well as various insects and other animals. These include the Black Parrot, which is found only on Praslin and the surrounding islets. The park has several short paths; Glacis Noire is the only official trail. The information about species and paths offers different points of reference: you can focus on the flora and fauna or take an interest in the trails described.
At 19.5 hectares, Vallée de Mai on Praslin is among the world's smallest natural UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is the only area in the Seychelles where all six species occur together. This site therefore draws attention both to its size and to the distinctive co-occurrence of the species.
Landscape and Historical Traces
On Curieuse, a mangrove swamp borders Baie Laraie. A raised boardwalk runs through the swamp and provides access to the mangrove habitat even at high tide. For almost a hundred years, Curieuse was used as a quarantine site for people with leprosy. This history offers a different way to explore the island from the landscape around the mangrove swamp.
The Ste. Anne Marine Park comprises six islands. On Moyenne Island, which is part of this park, there are remains of early settlers' houses, pirate graves and a small thatched chapel. These traces provide a distinct focus alongside the nature topics, drawing attention to former settlements, graves and a small structure.
Access can also play a role in planning your trip: the Seychelles marine parks can be reached by boat; Port-Launay can also be reached on foot.
