Four of Samoa’s ten islands are inhabited: Upolu, Savai’i, Apolima and Manono. You can tailor your choice of destinations to your interests: pools, caves and waterfalls sit alongside cultural performances, places of remembrance and Samoan traditions. When planning, consider whether you would like to focus more on nature and geology or on culture and history; the examples below show both sides.

Nature by the Water

The To-Sua Ocean Trench is 30 metres deep. A long ladder leads to a platform in the water pool. There is also a cave leading to the open sea, which is recommended for experienced divers. The recommendation applies to this cave.

Piula Cave Pool is on Main East Coast Road, by Piula Theological College in the village of Lufilufi, about 45 minutes from Apia. Travel time may vary depending on conditions. Its underwater cave connects to a second cave, while the cave at To-Sua Ocean Trench leads to the open sea. Day fales and toilets are available at Piula Cave Pool. Confirm locally that these facilities are available before your visit.

At Sopoaga Waterfall, there is an area for demonstrations of umu preparation and coconut husking. So, alongside the natural attraction, visitors may also be interested in a cultural demonstration at this site.

Papase’ea Sliding Rocks are in Se’ese’e in the Faleata district, about a 15-minute drive from Apia. Driving time may vary depending on conditions. There are two sliding areas: one for children and one for adults. Afu Aau Waterfall is also known as Olemoe Falls.

Apia: Places and Getting Around

Samoa Cultural Village is on Beach Road in central Apia. Palolo Deep Marine Reserve is around a five-minute walk from central Apia; the actual walking time may vary. These two details help distinguish a place in the city centre from a destination a short walk from the centre.

A popular walking trail in Apia leads to the grave of Robert Louis Stevenson and offers views of Samoa’s capital. Check whether the trail is accessible before making plans.

Cultural Sites and Traditions

Robert Louis Stevenson Museum is considered to be the place where the Scottish poet and author Robert Louis Stevenson fell in love. Its name connects a specific place with a historical memory of the writer.

According to Samoan tradition, Pa Sopo’ia Cave is considered an ancient route along which the spirits of the ancestors travel to Devil’s Haden at Cape Mulinu’u. This is the final meeting place before Pulotu, the spirit world. The cave can thus also be understood through its significance in Samoan tradition.
