Market and History in Rwamagana

Rwamagana can be viewed from two perspectives: the market offers a reference point in recent history that can be dated, while the royal heritage and Catholic mission history go back further. For your trip planning, this connection offers a cultural perspective to help you choose where to visit. The historical references range from the area’s former affiliation with Gisaka, through the colonial period, to the development of the mission and parish church. Specific local reference points include the market in Kigabiro Sector and the former royal residence in Bigabiro Quarter.

The Rwamagana market was officially inaugurated on 4 July 2025 during the Kwibohora 31 celebrations. Located in Kigabiro Sector, it can accommodate up to 1,200 traders. The historic inauguration date was 4 July 2025; the capacity of up to 1,200 traders indicates the market’s potential scale.

Royal History and Mission

Rwamagana belonged to Gisaka before the area was conquered by Rwanda in the 18th century. During the colonial period, Rwamagana was part of southern Buganza. Its political classification changed over time: Rwamagana belonged to Gisaka before Rwanda conquered the area in the 18th century; during the colonial period, it was part of southern Buganza. Gisaka and southern Buganza therefore refer to different historical contexts, not to the area at the same time. The reference to the 18th century dates the conquest, not the later colonial classification. Alongside this political chronology, the residence of Kigeri IV Rwabugiri and the Catholic mission offer two further perspectives: royal heritage and church development. The history of rule and the history of the mission can thus be read as distinct but connected themes.

The residence of King Kigeri IV Rwabugiri was located in Bigabiro Quarter in Rwamagana. Rwabugiri’s former numerous and very large royal compounds are also part of this history. Inteko y’Umuco considers the royal compounds in Rwamagana part of the preservation of historical heritage.

After the First World War, the priests had Rwabugiri’s royal compounds cleared to build the Rwamagana mission. Rwabutogo rwa Kabare ka Rwakagara supported the priests; at the time, he ruled over South Buganza.

The Catholic mission of Rwamagana was founded on 5 February 1919; the Catholic parish church was inaugurated in 1933. The dates are 14 years apart, making the two church milestones comparable in time while remaining distinct events. The clearing of the compounds after the First World War was part of the mission’s construction and should not be conflated with either its founding or the later inauguration of the parish church. The local history thus brings together royal heritage and the Catholic mission, while each date marks a distinct milestone.
