When planning a visit to Al Khawr, you can focus on two main themes: local history and walks in Al Khor, and the recreational facilities at the nearby park and zoo. In Al Khor, the fountains, watchtowers, harbor and Corniche take center stage. The park and zoo add play areas, mini golf and a museum to these attractions. You can decide in advance which discoveries you want to shape your stay.

Local history of Al Khor

Al Khor was founded in the mid-18th century by the Al Muhannadi tribe. Ain Hleetan Well was built in the 19th century after a water source was discovered near the coast. Locals believed the water had healing properties—a traditional local belief.

The watchtowers of Al Khor were used to observe ships and guard access to Ain Hleetan Well. Together, these structures point to the town’s maritime history and the importance of the well.

Corniche, harbor and museum

The Corniche in Al Khor is ideal for a walk. Traditional wooden dhows are moored in the harbor. The Al Khor Archaeological Museum is also located on the Corniche; admission is free. As admission terms can change, it is best to check them before your visit.

The Corniche brings together two different interests: spending time outdoors and visiting a museum. The harbor adds another maritime dimension to the walk. The Corniche combines a stroll with a museum visit; you can plan the park and zoo as a separate excursion.

Al Khor Park and Zoo nearby

Al Khor Park and Zoo is one of Qatar’s oldest public parks. Green spaces with pergolas offer room for picnics; there are also playgrounds, train rides for children and an amphitheater. The park also includes a museum, a mosque and a zoo. Two spacious play areas cater to younger and older children and have rubber flooring. Balls and clubs can be rented at the mini golf course.

The air-conditioned museum in the park covers 1,200 square meters and displays artifacts. It is distinct from the Al Khor Archaeological Museum on the Corniche: these are two different museums. The zoo is designed to allow visitors to view wildlife from as close as 1.5 meters. This visitor experience may change, so check the current arrangements before your visit.

The park is on Al Shamal Road, heading toward Al Khor City. The drive from Al Khor takes about ten minutes by car or taxi. There are 700 parking spaces for visitors. Road, travel time and parking information can change, so it is a good idea to check shortly before setting out.

Getting to Al Khor

Al Khor is on Qatar’s northeast coast. The drive from Doha takes about 45 minutes. Alternatively, you can take the metro to Lusail and then continue by bus. As travel times and connections can change, check the details before departure. Both options will take you to Al Khor.
