Vila Real combines a distinctive cityscape with cultural sites and hiking trails in the surrounding area. The city lies on a promontory at the confluence of the Corgo and Cabril rivers. The Corgo runs along the riverside avenue below a deep gorge; Parque Corgo is the city’s main green and recreational space. Cityscape, culture and regional cuisine

Avenida Carvalho Araújo offers a clear reference point for getting a feel for Vila Real’s architecture: it runs through the city, and one end is by the 19th-century town hall. Igreja dos Clérigos was designed by Nicolau Nasoni in an Italian-inspired Baroque style. Its single-nave interior features azulejos depicting Gospel scenes and historic altarpieces, including a particularly notable high altar. Torre de Quintela adds to this picture as one of the few late-medieval examples of civil and military architecture in the Trás-os-Montes region.

Local cuisine also leads to a place in the surrounding area: Covilhetes are meat pies from Vila Real, traditionally baked in molds made from the black pottery of Bisalhães. This pottery is an important part of the village’s cultural identity; traditional production methods are still used today. The connection between pastry and pottery is therefore more than a shared place name: the mold is part of the traditional way these pies are made.

Palace, sanctuary and cultural events

Casa de Mateus is a Baroque palace from the first half of the 18th century, designed by Nicolau Nasoni and surrounded by gardens on an extensive estate. Fundação da Casa de Mateus organizes festivals, courses, seminars and exhibitions. These include the Encontros de Música da Casa de Mateus, held annually during the summer months. Santuário de Panóias is about seven kilometers from Vila Real. It was built at the transition from the 2nd to the 3rd century and is one of only two sanctuaries of oriental cults on the Iberian Peninsula. This archaeological distinction makes it a destination in its own right, alongside the buildings in the cityscape.

• Florestas do Marão starts at Largo do Coladinho in Vila Nova. The route is 9.4 km long and takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes.
• Carvalhal de Gontães starts at Bioparque de Quintã and covers 13.7 km in about 4 hours and 45 minutes.
• Mineiro starts at the parish church of Vila Cova: 11.5 km and about 4 hours.
• Alvão Barragens–Barreiro–Lamas de Ôlo starts in Lamas de Ôlo. The stated time for the 13.4 km route is about 4 hours and 20 minutes.
• Fojo do Lobo starts in Samardã and covers 5.6 km; it takes about 2 hours and 25 minutes.
• Corgo Norte starts at Largo de Santa Iria in Vila Real and, at 24.3 km and about 7 hours and 40 minutes, is the longest of the routes listed here.

The time ranges from about two and a half hours for Fojo do Lobo to just under eight hours for Corgo Norte. An exhibition about the river’s origins, its geomorphological and biological development, and its connection to the history of Vila Real was developed for Parque Corgo.
