Folar de Valpaços is distinguished by two stages of dough fermentation specific to the municipality. Other highlights include an interactive museum dedicated to wine and regional heritage, historic buildings, and hiking trails and riverside attractions within the municipality. Valpaços therefore offers several points of interest for travellers who want to consider culture, cuisine and landscape when choosing a destination.

Hiking trails and riverside attractions within the municipality

The Vias Augustas XVII hiking trail runs for 19 km through the municipality of Valpaços. It passes through the parishes of Friões, including Mosteiró de Cima and Barracão; Ervões, including Sá; Vilarandelo, including Vilarandelo; Valpaços, including Lagoas; and Possacos, including Possacos. The trail is certified according to the standards of the Federação de Campismo e Montanhismo de Portugal and is signposted along its entire length. When comparing distance and navigation as you plan, both details matter: the 19 km refers to this section, and the signs cover its entire length.

The Centro Interpretativo da Ecovia do Rabaçal is another point of interest for hikers in the municipality. It is the meeting point for three hiking trails that form part of the Rio Rabaçal long-distance route. At Praia Fluvial do Rabaçal, wooden walkways provide accessible access to the river. These two Rabaçal attractions serve different purposes: the interpretation centre is the meeting point for three trails, while the Praia Fluvial provides access to the river via wooden walkways.

Wine, museums and architectural history

Casa do Vinho de Valpaços is an interactive museum equipped with modern multi-touch devices. It presents the history, characteristics and distinctive features of the region’s grapevines and wines, and also highlights its archaeological and landscape heritage. The museum thus combines knowledge about wine with other aspects of the region’s history and landscape.

The Valpaços Tourism Shop is located in Casa do Vinho and sells regional products. The Loja Interativa de Turismo in Valpaços is at Avenida Eng. Luís de Castro Saraiva, 5430-472 Valpaços.

The oldest parts of Casa do Arco date back to the 15th century. The Igreja Matriz de Valpaços, also known as Igreja de Santa Maria Maior, is a neoclassical church dating from the 19th century. These landmarks offer contrasting historical perspectives: the age of Casa do Arco’s oldest parts and the church’s style and century of origin.

The church interior also features specific architectural details, including a high choir, a pulpit on the Gospel side, two side altarpieces, two side chapels with altarpieces, and a main altarpiece. The altarpieces are neoclassical and made of polychrome carved wood.

Folar and local traditions

Folar de Valpaços is part of the municipality’s cuisine and is considered a distinctive emblem of the region. It has Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status. What sets it apart from similar products is the preparation of the dough using two fermentation stages specific to Valpaços.

Traditionally, Folar was made at Easter. On Easter Sunday, the clergy collected it from families as part of the Compasso, the Easter house-to-house visit. The bread is therefore also associated with a specific historical Easter custom. The Festas da Cidade e do Concelho de Valpaços are held in honour of Nossa Senhora da Saúde; the tourism portal lists an edition for 2026.

The main attractions can help guide your travel decision: the museum and historic buildings showcase cultural history, Folar brings local cuisine together with Easter tradition, and the municipality’s offerings range from signposted hiking trails to accessible riverside access.
