Cumeeira combines a hiking trail with far-reaching views and a wine-growing history that is also reflected in religious traditions and historical markers. When planning your visit, you can consider the landscape and heritage as two related but distinct highlights.

Hiking Trail and Landscape

The “Trilho do Céu e da Terra – Cumieira” descends to the settlement of Veiga, surrounded by greenery on the valley floor. Near the Capela de Santa Bárbara, the trail offers views of distant mountain ridges and Vila Real. The route thus contrasts two landscapes: the settlement in the valley and the distant views from higher ground.

Viewpoint and Vineyards

The Miradouro de Santa Bárbara is located at around 470 metres above sea level. The Capela de Santa Bárbara stands on one of Cumieira’s characteristic hills and offers wide-ranging views over valleys and slopes where the region’s wine is produced. The chapel is also associated with protection from thunderstorms, floods and hail, which can damage grapevine shoots. Here, views of the landscape meet a religious tradition linked to specific hazards to winegrowing.

Churches and Historical Connections

The Igreja Paroquial de Santa Eulália in Cumieira is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. The Igreja de Santa Eulália da Cumieira dates from the 18th century; the year 1729 appears on its main façade. It also features an extensive ensemble of 18th-century gilded woodcarving in the Joanine Baroque style, with a tendency towards Rococo. The date and stylistic classification offer different architectural clues: a specific date on the façade and the decorative classification of the woodcarving.

The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Esperança is mentioned in the 1758 Parish Memories; its construction is dated to the 17th or 18th century. It houses a folk-art representation of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, which may date from the 16th century. The chapel was administered by the Morgados of Casa de Mateus. The dates refer to different things: the possible date of the representation, the construction and the 1758 mention.

Local Winegrowing History

Granite marker No. 55 is located at the Adega Cooperativa da Cumieira and is part of the demarcation of the Douro wine region. It is also associated with the Alto Douro Vinhateiro UNESCO World Heritage landscape. During supplementary demarcations under D. Maria I (1788–1790), more than 200 vineyards in Cumieira were deemed suitable for producing Vinho de feitoria. The Cumieira cooperative winery was founded in 1960, one year after the Adega Cooperativa de Santa Marta was founded in 1959. The boundary markers, historical winegrowing classification and cooperative foundations thus illustrate different aspects of the region’s wine history.
