In Sabrosa, the cultural landscape and the town’s history are distinct highlights. The town lies within the demarcated Port wine region. From the Miradouro de Sabrosa, you can look out over the valley of the River Pinhão; at the same time, it reveals the characteristic, evolving and living cultural landscape of the Alto Douro Vinhateiro. Different types of terraces, plateaus, schist walls and other defining details are part of this landscape. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on landscape views, archaeological history or architecture.

The Castro de Sabrosa

The Castro de Sabrosa is a fortified settlement that was first used in the Iron Age and remained in use through the Middle Ages. Its defensive system consisted of three rows of walls made of dressed stone and a double ditch. This reinforced the areas most vulnerable to attack on the west and north sides. Both the long period of use and the structure are important to its historical context: the span of time tells the story of its use, while the walls and ditch reflect its defensive design.

Churches, chapels and manor houses

The Igreja Matriz de Sabrosa dates from the 18th century and was built in the Baroque style. It may have been built on the site of a chapel belonging to the Casa de Fernão Magalhães, which was demolished in the 17th century. The former chapel is mentioned in the will Fernão de Magalhães drew up before his voyage around the world. Whether the chapel actually stood on the church site remains uncertain.

Another chapel is Nossa Senhora da Conceição at the Casa da Capela; it was built before 1542. The Casa da Capela comprises a manor house, an estate and other properties. At the Casa da Comba, the most imposing coat of arms among the town’s manor houses stands on a large granite block. The two houses offer different points of interest: the Casa da Capela is an estate complex made up of several parts, while the coat of arms takes centre stage at the Casa da Comba.

The exhibition “Os Locais e Culturas da Viagem de Magalhães” offers a different cultural perspective. It presents the diversity of cultures in the countries reached by the expedition commanded by Fernão de Magalhães, complementing the local architectural history with a view beyond individual buildings.

Hiking in Sabrosa

For a specific hiking plan, the “Trilho do Castro de Sabrosa” is a named trail with clear details: it is linear, 6.8 km long and has a stated duration of two hours. Check local conditions before setting out. The trail length and stated duration give you a guide for planning your time.

As part of the “Trilhos de Sabrosa” project, four hiking trails of the “short route” type were created. The project also envisaged a hiking tourism support centre in the former primary school in Paços; the planned site is centrally located at the entrance to Vila de Sabrosa.
