Ermelo combines striking hiking destinations with a history that is also reflected in the village itself. Two trails start beside the parish church, but lead to different landmarks: the PR3 Fisgas de Ermelo goes to the Miradouro das Fisgas and down to the Rio Olo. The PR7 – Caminhos da Sr.ª da Graça takes you from a river crossing to the Fojo forest house. Other highlights include Fisgas de Ermelo, the Via Sacra and a picnic area on the Rio Olo. You can shape your stay around a variety of discoveries rather than following just one theme.

Two hiking trails, different routes

The PR3 Fisgas de Ermelo starts in Ermelo beside the parish church. It leads to the Miradouro das Fisgas and then down to the Rio Olo. The significant changes in elevation make this trail challenging and exciting. When planning your hike, keep this in mind and don’t judge the trail solely by its viewpoint.

The PR7 also starts in the village of Ermelo beside the parish church, but follows different waypoints: from the Abelheira Bridge, it crosses the Rio Olo and leads to the Fojo forest house. From there, you can take a short detour to Fisgas de Ermelo. The difference lies in the routes: the PR3 focuses on the Miradouro and significant changes in elevation, while the PR7 features a bridge, river and forest house—with the option of a detour.

Fisgas de Ermelo and Parque Natural do AlvĂŁo

Parque Natural do Alvão includes a significant part of the Freguesia Ermelo, including Lugar de Ermelo, Fervença, Varzigueto, Barreiro and Assureira. Fisgas de Ermelo is considered the most distinctive site in the protected area. Above and below the waterfalls are natural pools known as “piocas.” Their clear water invites you to swim; bathing conditions can vary by season. Be sure to check them before planning a swim.

The Centro Interpretativo das Fisgas de Ermelo is housed in the former Casa Florestal do Fojo. Interactive displays introduce important local sights as well as the fauna, flora and geology of Parque Natural do Alvão. The customs and ways of life that shaped life in the centuries-old village of Ermelo are also part of the heritage preserved by the centre. Here, the landscape and the village’s history come together as distinct themes that enrich your exploration of Ermelo.

Village history and architecture

Ermelo received a charter in 1196—a clear historical reference point for the village. A Via Sacra with mysterious crosses is another of the village’s distinctive traditions. Visitors interested in the cultural landscape will also find a link between local history and architecture: the Circuito de Ermelo passes through Ermelo, whose remarkable collection of rural architecture includes house walls built from the region’s exposed rock.

The Freguesia Ermelo is also home to Ponte da Várzea, which crosses the Rio Olo. It was probably an old Roman crossing that was rebuilt in the Middle Ages. This cautious description is part of its history: its Roman origin is considered probable, not confirmed. Along with the charter, the Via Sacra and the rural architecture, the bridge reveals further aspects of the area’s cultural heritage.

A break on the Rio Olo

Parque de Merendas de Ermelo is located in the Freguesia Ermelo on the Rio Olo. Its facilities include drinking water, tables, barbecue grills, toilets and a car park. If you plan to stop at the picnic area, check the facilities on site before your visit. This adds a practical place to take a break from the hiking trails without limiting your visit to a single viewpoint or route.
