Praia de Manta Rota, boardwalks through the dunes and the Ecovia do Litoral represent three different sides of a stay: the beach, observing nature and cycling. In August, the São João da Degola festival adds a cultural occasion. You can choose Manta Rota to suit the focus of your trip and consider nature, a cycling route or festival days alongside the beach.

Coast and nature park

Praia de Manta Rota lies on the eastern edge of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The park stretches along the Algarve coast to Manta Rota and encompasses barrier islands, salt marshes, sandbanks, dunes and salt pans. This brings two scales together: the specific Praia and the broader landscape of the nature park.

Ria Formosa extends for 60 kilometres from Ancão to the towns of Manta Rota and Cacela Velha. This regional context helps place Manta Rota within an extensive coastal landscape. If you are particularly interested in dunes and vegetation, the Praia offers a tangible point of interest: elevated boardwalks run through the dunes and allow you to observe the dune vegetation.

Beach visits and activities

There are various water sports available at Praia de Manta Rota. You can therefore shape your visit according to your interests: the boardwalks draw your attention to the dune vegetation, while water sports offer another beach activity. If you are travelling with children, there is also a playground there. The Praia also has a car park.

For orientation in town, the Manta Rota tourist office at Largo do Casino is a useful point of reference. The beach, dune paths and water sports offer different themes to consider when planning your trip; they do not all have to be equally important.

Cycling on the Ecovia do Litoral

The Ecovia do Litoral passes through Manta Rota between Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António. It is part of the European EuroVelo network and forms a section of Route 1, the Atlantic Coast Route. This gives cyclists a named route with which to place Manta Rota in context. The Ecovia provides direct access to several beaches; route conditions may change, so it is advisable to check them before setting out.

The EuroVelo 1 – Rota da Costa Atlântica – Algarve also passes through an area of ecological importance around the lakes as it heads towards Manta Rota. For cyclists, two specific landscape features are therefore central: the coastal route with its beach access and the stretch through the ecologically significant lake area. Which of these matters more to you depends on what you want to focus on during your trip.

São João da Degola and local character

The São João da Degola festivities take place in Manta Rota from 24 to 30 August. Their highlight is the Banho Santo. As part of the tradition, participants dressed as “Montanheiros” historically reenact the event. The festivities offer a cultural point of reference for an August trip; programme details may vary from year to year. So check the programme for the relevant year before travelling.

Even outside the festivities, Manta Rota retains some of its original character as a fishing village. This adds a cultural dimension to the landscape and sporting attractions, without limiting your stay to a single theme.

Planning your stay

When looking for a holiday rental in Manta Rota, you can first decide whether your main focus is the beach and water sports, observing the dunes, cycling or visiting during the festivities. Then it is worth checking the specific details for each property.

If you are planning to travel in August, take the festivities from 24 to 30 August into account and check the programme for that year. For a bike ride, the Ecovia do Litoral is a named route through Manta Rota; check the route conditions in advance. The town thus combines specific beach offerings with nature and route-related features, as well as a recurring festival, which you can weigh according to your interests.
