Boticas lies in the mountainous, rugged Barroso region. Its distinctive attractions include the Gallaecian warrior statues in the CEDIEC permanent exhibition and Vinho dos Mortos, whose production method is closely connected with the area. In Boticas Parque, the river, floodplain forests and oak stands take centre stage. Boticas therefore offers a range of points of interest: cultural heritage, guided nature experiences and regional products.

Warrior Statues and Their Findspot

In Boticas, the permanent exhibition at the Centro Europeu de Documentação e Interpretação da Escultura Castreja (CEDIEC) displays replicas of four Gallaecian warrior statues. The statues were found at Outeiro Lesenho. The connection between the four figures and this named findspot gives the exhibition a specific historical context and focuses attention on a clearly defined group of sculptures.

The River and Nature in Boticas Parque

Boticas Parque is in the municipality of Boticas, not in the town centre. The Rio Beça flows through the park; its natural features include floodplain forests, oak stands and habitats of high natural value. The park landscape thus brings together the course of the river, preserved woodland and other valuable habitats.

Guided interpretive visits introduce visitors to different areas of the park. These include, among other places, a watermill, Ponte Pedrinha and the Rio Beça. Advance booking is required for these guided visits. A tour offers a way to explore individual sites in the park together with their surroundings, rather than focusing on just one place.

Cycling and Regional Tastings

The park’s more than 60 hectares can be explored by mountain bike along its trails. Bikes are also available for rent for visits to nearby villages. The options offer different perspectives: mountain bikes take you along trails within the park, while the bikes are also intended for village visits. Advance booking is required for the bicycle activities.

During guided visits with tastings, you can sample Mel de Barroso, smoked products, Bola de Carne, rye bread and natural herbal infusions. The experience includes a 1.5-kilometre walk. This guided visit must also be booked in advance. The tasting combines a range of regional foods and drinks with a walk, without requiring a longer hike.

Vinho dos Mortos and Barrosã Beef

Vinho dos Mortos is a distinctive local tradition. The wine comes from Boticas: after bottling, it is buried in the ground and ferments there in the dark for about a year. The unusual sequence of bottling, burying and fermenting makes the production process itself an important part of this wine tradition.

Barrosã beef is also associated with Boticas and has a protected designation of origin. Together with Vinho dos Mortos and the tastings at Boticas Parque, it illustrates how different regional specialities contribute to the area’s culinary identity.

Another Perspective on the Wine

Near Granja, within the municipality of Boticas and not in the town centre, the Repositório Histórico do Vinho dos Mortos presents the wine’s production process. While the local tradition is associated with its distinctive fermentation, the focus here is specifically on how the wine is made. This place complements the cultural and culinary themes associated with Boticas.
