There are two distinct ways to plan a visit to Ponte da Barca: exploring the routes along the Rio Lima and discovering the town’s cultural history. The Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês also shapes the region’s natural landscape. When looking for a hotel, it helps to decide on your priorities early: Would you like to explore historic sites, experience the riverside landscape, or plan nature and water activities? The differences below offer some specific points to guide you.

The Lima River and the national park’s landscape

About 51 percent of the municipality of Ponte da Barca lies within the Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês. A special protected-area designation applies to Mata do Cabril in the parish of Lindoso: it is designated as a fully protected area within the national park. This means two different scales are relevant—the municipality’s share of the park and the protection status of a specific area. Together with Spain’s Parque Natural da Baixa Limia – Serra do Xurés, the national park forms the cross-border Gerês-Xurés Park. It was declared a biosphere reserve in 2009.

Walking or cycling along the Rio Lima

The Ecovia de Ponte da Barca connects the Minho towns of Ponte de Lima and Ponte da Barca. The route is 15 kilometres long and almost entirely flat; you can walk or cycle it. Following the Rio Lima, it passes through a landscape of weirs, fish weirs, farmland and vineyards. When choosing a route, you can therefore take several specific features into account: its length, the almost entirely flat terrain and the riverside landscape.

Another point of reference is the Choupal de Ponte da Barca. It starts at the medieval bridge west of the historic town centre and ends at the confluence with the Rio Vade. By contrast, the Ecovia connects Ponte de Lima and Ponte da Barca. These details describe different geographical routes; when planning, it is worth keeping each route and its endpoints in mind.

Historic sites and collections

A walking tour of the Centro HistĂłrico de Ponte da Barca begins at the medieval bridge, the former Pombaline market and the pillory. It then continues past the Capela da Lapa to the Igreja da MisericĂłrdia. The Ponte sobre o Lima was built in the first half of the 15th century. The Igreja Matriz de Ponte da Barca dates from the 17th century. These buildings represent different historical periods; along the route, you can also follow the sequence of religious buildings.

The Centro Interpretativo do Património Fernão de Magalhães is housed in the Casa de Maria Lopes da Costa, a building probably dating from the late 14th century. At the Museu do Quartzo, an exhibition explains the geology of the municipality of Ponte da Barca; a separate area is dedicated to Marian apparitions. The museum also houses Portugal’s largest collection of quartz crystals. It therefore offers both a focus on geology and another exhibition topic.

Lindoso and the Albufeira de Touvedo

Lindoso is home to Portugal’s largest and oldest collection of espigueiros. It comprises more than 50 examples dating from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. From the walls of Castelo de Lindoso, you can look out over the Lima Valley and towards Spain. The espigueiros and the viewpoint offer different perspectives: one focuses on rural heritage, while the other looks across the valley as far as Spain.

The Albufeira de Touvedo is located in the Parque Nacional da Peneda-GerĂŞs on the Rio Lima, downstream from Lindoso. It is suitable for water sports such as canoeing and for sport fishing; local conditions may vary. You can walk or cycle along the banks of the Rio Lima by the Albufeira de Touvedo. Access to the Ancoradouro de Entre Ambos-os-Rios is via the Estrada Nacional N203. If you plan to use this access, check road conditions before setting out.
