Cabreiro offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the Ponte de Cabreiro, the Trilho do Ramiscal and the landscape along the Rio Cabreiro. At the bridge, the focus is on the contrast between two arches; on the hiking trail, on a sequence of named places; and by the river, on a rugged valley with pools. The planned Ecovia de Cabreiro a Loureda is another feature. Built heritage, hiking trails and river landscapes offer different considerations when choosing a destination.

The Ponte de Cabreiro and its arches

The Ponte de Cabreiro is listed as a monument of public interest in the localities of Sobreira and Igreja, in the parish of Cabreiro, the municipality of Arcos de Valdevez and the district of Viana do Castelo. The designation was published in 2023. The bridge has two arches of unequal size: the larger is round, while the smaller is pointed. A round arch has a curved shape; in a pointed arch, the sides meet at a point at the top. At the Ponte, the arches therefore differ not only in size but also in shape. This contrast gives the structure its distinctive architectural character.

Hiking trails and a planned connection

The Trilho do Ramiscal follows a paved path from Vilela Seca through Lordelo to Branda do Rodrigo. Branda do Rodrigo is a small floodplain. Together, the starting point, intermediate stop and destination form a clear sequence of places that defines the route of the hiking trail. The Trilho thus focuses on a path through several named places, while the Ponte is about a single structure and its architecture. Visitors choosing Cabreiro for different interests can consider these two features separately.

The 1,850-metre Ecovia de Cabreiro a Loureda is also planned as a tourism project. Its route is planned along the right bank of the Vez River. It is intended to connect Poço das Caldeiras in Loureda with S. Sebastião in Bouça do Eido in Cabreiro. The two routes therefore have clearly different profiles: the Trilho do Ramiscal is defined by its paved path and the sequence of Vilela Seca, Lordelo and Branda do Rodrigo; the Ecovia, by its planned length, the riverbank and its proposed endpoints. The Ecovia should be understood as a planned connection.

Valley, pools and local tradition

The Rio Cabreiro cuts through a secluded, rugged valley and forms pools within it. The description brings together two distinct landscape features: the valley creates an enclosed space, while the pools add to the river’s course. Alongside its buildings and hiking trails, Cabreiro therefore has its own distinct landscape to explore.

Poço da Ola, also called Gola, is associated with deep, mysterious waters and a legendary significance. The legend “Lenda do Velho de Cabreiro” is associated with both the parish of Cabreiro and Poço da Ola on the Rio Cabreiro. The tradition is thus linked to a named place and the river, without reducing the legend to the bridge’s architecture or a hiking trail’s route. This offers another perspective when choosing what to explore during a stay: alongside architectural form and route, there is also the local storytelling tradition.
