History on different scales

The cultural history of Santiago do Cacém can be explored on different scales: the historic centre with Castelo, the history of the Museu Municipal, and the ruins of Miróbriga. This lets you shape your stay around your own interests, rather than treating a building, a collection and an archaeological site as interchangeable subjects. Those drawn particularly to the townscape will find a different focus from those interested in coinage or the remains of an ancient settlement.

The Museu Municipal de Santiago do Cacém has been housed in the former district prison since 1972. After conservation and adaptation work, the building opened to the public as a town museum. Its former use is thus linked to its later role as a museum; both aspects give the place a distinctive architectural and institutional history.

The museum’s numismatic collection offers a separate historical thread: it documents coinage from the 3rd century BC to the beginning of the Republic. Those interested in historical developments as reflected in coins will find a clearly defined focus here, distinct from the history of the museum building.

Miróbriga: Settlement and Roman Architecture

Miróbriga offers a glimpse into a long history of settlement. The site was inhabited at least from the Iron Age until the 4th century AD. The ruins lie in a particularly commanding location, from which an entire region rich in agricultural, maritime and mining resources could be controlled. The site’s landscape setting is therefore also part of its documented interpretation.

The archaeological site includes baths, a Roman bridge, domus with frescoes, a forum, temples and Roman paving. Its range extends from residential and bathing buildings to public and religious structures; the bridge and paving add the transport routes to the picture. Those interested in ancient settlement patterns will thus gain a different perspective here than from the coin collection at the Museu Municipal.

Castelo, Old Town and Garden

Castelo is a national monument and forms the heart of the historic centre, which lies on the eastern slope of the castle hill. Narrow, steep streets and manor houses shape the centre’s architectural heritage. This description of the setting can help you find your bearings: it conveys the character of the surroundings and distinguishes the townscape from the individual fortification.

Castelo has a parallelogram-shaped plan and is surrounded by nine towers and turrets. Access is through the only surviving gate. These specific architectural features add a clearly defined form to its status as a national monument.

Tapada dos Condes de Avillez offers a different kind of place to spend time in the historic centre: it is a public garden for recreation and leisure. It was originally designed as a botanical garden with a romantic character. This gives it a distinct place alongside local history, fortifications and archaeology.
