Junceira can be explored through several historical traces: religious sites and traditions, structures along the Carril and former mining activity. The dates and places belong to different chapters of its history. Poço Redondo, a locality within the União de Freguesias Serra/Junceira, is a distinct cultural point of interest, with a hermitage dedicated to the Paraclete. Visitors considering Junceira as a destination can thus distinguish between local religious history and subjects related to water engineering and the former use of the landscape.
Church, Hermitage and Religious History
On 9 February 1570, Junceira was established as a vicariate of the Order of Christ. The Igreja Matriz de Junceira was rebuilt in 1820. The two dates refer to different historical points: the establishment of the vicariate and the rebuilding of the parish church. The Festa em Honra do Espírito Santo, the festival in honour of the Holy Spirit, is also part of the area’s history. It was celebrated in Junceira in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The hermitage in Poço Redondo is dedicated to the Paraclete. Historical celebrations in honour of the Holy Spirit at this hermitage were organised by the parish priest. The activities of the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit of the Parish of São Mateus are also documented for the period from 1744 to 1867. These dates provide insight into different religious contexts; they do not represent a single, continuous history of events.
Bridge and Water Engineering at Carril
The Ponte Romana de Carril stands on the Ribeira da Lousã, in the parish of Junceira. The three-arched bridge still provides a crossing to the opposite bank. Check local conditions before your visit. This allows the practical use of the bridge to be taken into account when planning, without treating its historical character as a guarantee of conditions on site.
The Carril hydro-agricultural project in the Junceira area includes a dam built on the Ribeira da Lousã. The project also extends into the União das Freguesias de Serra e Junceira. In the wider area, the now-vanished Roman-medieval dam of Chocapalhas, CNS No. 15961, stood along the Ribeira da Lousã, also known as the Carril. It disappeared as a result of the construction of the Barragem do Carril, which was inaugurated in 2002. A crossing still in use, an existing project and a vanished older dam thus represent different aspects of the history of water in the area.
Another historical trace leads to Poço Redondo: the gold mine there was worked in the 20th century and is now abandoned. It adds mining history to the religious and water-engineering themes, without equating mining with the construction of bridges and dams.
A Dated Event Example
The Festa da Juventude da Junceira took place in Junceira from 21 to 24 July 2023. On the first three days of the event, 21, 22 and 23 July, the Mini BRInCKa exhibition of LEGO® builds was offered. Admission was free; the event was organised by the Associação Cultural, Recreativa e Desportiva da Freguesia de Junceira. This edition combines a specific date with an exhibition programme and a local organiser.
The distinction is clear when choosing a destination based on its themes: the church, hermitage and festival traditions lead into Junceira’s religious history; the Ponte Romana, dams and mine offer other perspectives on the history of construction and land use. This makes it possible to understand Junceira through different places and periods, rather than reducing its local themes to a single era.
