At the foot of the Serra do Mata Amores, Fortios combines its landscape with a rich history of churches and pilgrimage. This makes the town an interesting destination if you would like to include both views of the surrounding area and distinctive examples of local culture in your trip. Pilgrimages and festivals can also help you decide when to travel.
Landscape and church art
The Serra do Mata Amores shapes Fortios’s setting. At the same time, the town’s churches tell of different periods and forms of religious art. One notable example is the CIPO: this granite stone bears a Latin inscription and stands in the churchyard of the present-day parish church. It may be the oldest document of Fortios. The stone, inscription and location make it a distinctive focus of local history.
The Igreja de SĂŁo SebastiĂŁo dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its architecture combines Mannerist, Baroque, vernacular and vernacular-traditional elements. It also features a single painted masonry altarpiece. These different classifications give you an idea of the wide range of architectural influences attributed to this church.
The Igreja de São Domingos stands above a complex of ruins, which probably dates back to the Luso-Roman period. Its painted trompe-l’œil altarpiece is considered one of the oldest examples of this art in the region and probably dates from the late Middle Ages or early 16th century. The church partly collapsed in 1925 and remains in a ruined state. Plan to see it as the exterior of a ruin, not as a visit to a functioning church.
Pilgrimages and festivals throughout the year
Since the mid-18th century, the Santuário do Senhor Jesus dos Aflitos has been regarded as the most important centre of devotion and pilgrimage in this region. The sanctuary’s hermitage dates from before 1720, and its collection includes 52 votive offerings. This site therefore brings together a long history of religious significance and tangible evidence of devotion. The Santuário can be reached by road; you can return on foot or by road.
The pilgrimage takes place every year on the first Sunday in May and attracts pilgrims from all over Portugal. Check the date before your trip. The festival calendar also offers a range of occasions: since 1986, Fortios has hosted an annual national or international festival of folk groups. The Rancho FolclĂłrico dos Fortios began collecting the customs, traditions, dances and songs of their ancestors from older residents in 1984, as part of an ethnofolkloric project. The summer festivities take place on the first weekend of August and include concerts, dances and a procession in honour of SĂŁo Domingos. Check the programme for the relevant festivities before your trip.
Views and travel planning
If you would also like to experience Fortios through its landscape, you can climb to the foot of the Serra do Mata Amores. From there, you can enjoy views of the town and surrounding countryside. Since outdoor conditions are important for a visit, check them in advance.
If you plan to include the Serra, also keep an eye on conditions for outdoor activities. This will help you choose your accommodation dates to suit the experiences you want to include in your trip, without needing to turn your cultural and landscape discoveries into a fixed itinerary.
