Sao Jorge brings together historic architecture, mills with different stories, a coastal swimming complex, and routes for hikers and mountain bikers. When planning your stay, you can first consider which of these aspects interests you most: sacred art and early industrial history, Atlantic landscapes, or an activity with a clearly stated distance and difficulty level.

Church and the History of Milling

The Igreja Matriz de São Jorge was built in the 17th century and is considered the largest Baroque church in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Inside, gilded Baroque-era Joanine wood altars and paintings on canvas shape the interior. Its construction date, standing, and furnishings make the church a prominent destination for anyone interested in the region’s sacred architecture.

Another strand of the island’s history leads to the Núcleo Primitivo de São Jorge. There, you can see the ruins of former sugar cane mills built at the beginning of the island’s settlement. Since 2003, the Núcleo has been classified as a Monument of Municipal Interest. The site therefore represents early sugar cane processing; the mills themselves are ruins, not facilities still in operation.

The Moinho de Água de São Jorge combines a long history with continued operation: its history goes back more than 300 years, and the mill still grinds wheat, corn, barley, and rye. The grain comes from the agricultural terraces of São Jorge. Visitors can watch it in operation. This destination offers a way to understand both the processing and the origins of the types of grain used.

The Serragem da Achadinha also offers a glimpse into a working milling craft, in this case the operation of a water-powered sawmill. Visitors can observe the mechanism at close range. The Serragem is the only water-powered sawmill still in operation on Madeira. Since 1998, it has been classified as a Monument of Local Value by the Direção Regional dos Assuntos Culturais (DRAC) because of its cultural and historical significance. Unlike the ruins of the Núcleo Primitivo, this is a sawmill that is still in operation.

Landscape and Coast

The Farol de São Jorge is 14 metres tall and began operating in April 1959. From the Miradouro do Pico, you can see rugged mountains covered in lush green forests and the Atlantic Ocean. Together, these two destinations offer different perspectives: the lighthouse provides a historic navigational landmark, while the viewpoint opens up views of the mountains and sea.

At the mouth of the Ribeira de São Jorge, the Complexo Balnear do Calhau de São Jorge has a small beach. The bathing complex also includes access to a freshwater lagoon and three swimming pools. It therefore offers three different bathing options: a small beach, a freshwater lagoon, and three swimming pools.

Hiking or Mountain Biking

The PR 18 – Levada do Rei starts at the water treatment station in Quebradas, São Jorge. This moderately difficult hike covers 5.3 kilometres, with a further 5.3 kilometres for the return journey; the estimated duration is 3 hours and 30 minutes. This makes it easier to gauge the time needed than a distance given for one way only. The stated difficulty level and round-trip distance are useful guides when planning your day.

Down – São Jorge, by contrast, is a mountain bike route connecting São Jorge with Arco de São Jorge. It is 1.4 kilometres long and rated very difficult. Comparing it with the PR 18 highlights an important difference between the activities: the downhill route is much shorter, but is rated considerably more difficult than the moderately difficult hike. So the choice depends not only on distance, but also on whether you would rather hike or mountain bike.
