In Ponta do Sol, different themes for exploration come together: a pebble beach in a small bay, a distinctive pier with a long history, cultural attractions and nature. When planning your trip, you can focus on the coast, architectural history, exhibitions or a hike—depending on what interests you most during your visit.
Coast and Views
Praia da Ponta do Sol is in a small bay within the town. The pebble beach is nestled between protective valley slopes and is about 160 metres long. It is also known for its clear, mild bathing water; actual swimming conditions may vary.
Facilities at Praia include changing rooms, accessible sanitary facilities, a bar, a play area and a summer library. As the operation of facilities can change, it is advisable to check their current status before your visit if needed.
At Miradouro Sobranceiro Ă Ponta do Sol, concrete benches provide a place to rest and take in the surroundings. From there, you can see the green mountains surrounding Ponta do Sol and the deep blue, crystal-clear sea. The viewpoint thus combines a place to sit with views of the mountains and coast.
The Cais: Architecture and History
Cais da Ponta do Sol was inaugurated on 9 September 1849. A wide rounded arch connects the coastal cliff to the pier. The entire structure was built from local basalt, dressed stone and rounded stones—materials and a design that make the pier a distinctive architectural feature.
There are historic details at the entrance, too: an old dungeon carved into the rock and the guardhouse can be seen there. For those interested in architectural history, these are two clearly identifiable features of the Cais, in addition to the arch.
Culture in Ponta do Sol and Lugar de Baixo
In the centre of Ponta do Sol is the Centro Cultural John dos Passos. It is dedicated to the writer John dos Passos and to the municipality’s artists and collectors. Its facilities include a permanent exhibition on the writer’s life and work, two museum spaces, a library, rooms for temporary exhibitions and an auditorium.
An annual symposium is dedicated to John dos Passos. If this event is relevant to your travel plans, check the current programme. The Centro focuses on the municipality’s literature and art, while BAM – Museu da Banana da Madeira explores banana cultivation and its importance to the island.
BAM is located in the village of Lugar de Baixo in the municipality of Ponta do Sol. It tells the story of bananas in Madeira, their transport processes and their importance to the island’s economic development. A visit also includes experimental banana plantations and technologically equipped greenhouses, where visitors can observe the cultivation. As visitor arrangements may change, it is best to check them before planning your visit.
Another architectural feature of the municipality is Palacete do Lugar de Baixo, also known as “Palacete dos Zinos”. The adjoining chapel is dedicated to Saint Anthony. Both buildings were constructed at the end of the 19th century; the palacete is in the Romantic style.
Nature and Hiking
Many species of migratory birds use Lagoa do Lugar de Baixo as a resting or nesting place. Alongside coastal and mountain views, the municipality’s natural attractions therefore include a site that is important to migratory birds.
For a hike, the Lombada da Ponta do Sol circular route is another option: it is 7.8 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. The start and finish are at the same place, SĂtio da Lombada, north of the town of Ponta do Sol. Check trail conditions before setting out.
