The Miradouro do Farol da Ponta do Pargo offers panoramic views of the Atlantic and the surrounding rock formations. It is located on Ponta da Vigia, the island’s westernmost cape, on a 290-metre-high cliff. From the Miradouro da Boa Morte, the view stretches across Madeira’s west coast, the ocean and the cliffs. Ponta Do Pargo therefore offers a variety of scenic views: the open sea, rock formations and the west coast.

Lighthouse and protected landscape

The Farol da Ponta do Pargo lighthouse began operating on 5 June 1922. This date places the start of lighthouse operations precisely in the area’s history and provides a distinct historical point of interest alongside the viewpoints and landscape.

The Área Protegida da Ponta do Pargo comprises the Parque Natural Marinho da Ponta do Pargo in the marine area, as well as the Monumento Natural da Ponta do Pargo and the Paisagem Protegida da Ponta do Pargo on land. This arrangement distinguishes a marine protected area from two designations for land areas. Visitors exploring the landscape can therefore consider the sea and land as distinct natural and protected spaces.

The Área Protegida contains natural plant formations as well as nesting and resting areas for land and seabirds. This provides a tangible connection with nature alongside the panoramas of the ocean and cliffs. The points of interest thus range from the coastal landscape to plants and bird habitats.

The Paisagem Protegida also includes features of a traditional agricultural cultural landscape: storage buildings known as palheiros, terraces and retaining walls made of hewn stone. The palheiros are agricultural storage buildings; the terraces and walls add further built features to this picture of the landscape. Together, these details make the area’s agricultural character tangible alongside its natural landscape features.

Trails and viewpoints

The footpath to the Cascata da Garganta Funda viewpoint begins in the village of Pedregal. It is described as easy and short, and measures about 600 metres each way. The distance is for one direction and helps you gauge the length of the trail accurately when planning.

The Vereda do Pesqueiro offers uninterrupted views of the Atlantic and striking cliffs throughout the entire trail. If you want a route where the sea and rocks remain in view all the way, this trail has a clearly defined focus. This description differs from one that primarily identifies a single viewpoint and the length of the path leading to it.

The path to the Miradouro da Boa Morte is about 250 metres long. Together with the route to the Cascata da Garganta Funda, this provides specific guidance for two viewpoints with different stated distances: about 600 metres each way for the Cascata and around 250 metres to the Miradouro da Boa Morte. The distance for Garganta Funda is explicitly given for one direction.

Another trail description concerns the Levada Nova da Calheta: in Ponta Do Pargo, it has several crossings along regional roads. This detail relates to the route of the levada and is as relevant when exploring this trail as the uninterrupted Atlantic and cliff views on the Vereda do Pesqueiro.
