Paço de Arcos combines the beach and fishing tradition with a historic centre and distinctive buildings. During your stay in Paço de Arcos, you can choose whether to focus on its coastal character or learn more about its architecture and religious traditions.
Beaches and fishing tradition
Praia de Paço de Arcos has a sandy beach about 400 metres long and is lined by the Passeio Marítimo de Oeiras. Paço de Arcos is also a town with a fishing tradition.
A smaller beach option is Praia dos Pescadores, also known as Praia Velha. In terms of size, Praia de Paço de Arcos, with its sandy beach of about 400 metres, is the larger of the two. Pets are allowed at Praia Velha if accompanied by their owners. As local beach rules may change, check them again before your visit.
Historic centre along the waterfront
The historic centre consists of one- or two-storey residential buildings along narrow streets. These follow the line of the waterfront. The centre also includes the Chafariz do séc. XIX fountain in Praça da República.
The bay is also part of the town’s history. Historically, it was suitable for the construction of a small river port.
Palace, chapels and local tradition
Palácio dos Arcos was built in the late 15th century by Antão Martins Homem. According to local tradition, the name of the town of Paço de Arcos derives from Palácio dos Arcos and its arches. The palace includes a chapel that has been dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Rosário since it was built.
The estate of Palácio dos Arcos also includes terraced gardens, an extensive wooded area and agricultural land. Separate from this is Capela do Senhor Jesus dos Navegantes: it dates from the 17th century and features Baroque elements. Its altar is distinguished in particular by gilded wood carvings. The two chapels also differ in their dedication and historical context: the chapel of Palácio dos Arcos has been dedicated to Nossa Senhora do Rosário since it was built; Capela do Senhor Jesus dos Navegantes dates from the 17th century and features Baroque elements.
Annual village festivities
The annual Festas anuais da Vila include a preparatory triduum and a solemn procession. During the procession, an image of Senhor Jesus dos Navegantes is carried to the parish church. The festival thus combines a preparatory religious tradition with a procession through the town. If you would like to plan your trip around these festivities, check the dates in advance.
