Queijas brings together architectural history, religious art and events for various cultural occasions. The Vila Cacilda building dates back to the 18th century; the Igreja de SĂŁo Miguel de Queijas features a six-metre-high Resurrection panel alongside five paintings. Other highlights include the Monumento S. Miguel Arcanjo at the entrance roundabout and events such as the Festas em Honra de SĂŁo Miguel Arcanjo and the Milha de Queijas. If you would like to give your stay a cultural focus, you can choose between architectural history, religious themes and a specific event date.

Vila Cacilda: Architectural History and Azulejos

The Vila Cacilda building, also known as Casa de D. Miguel, dates with certainty from the 18th century. Both names refer to the same building. Inside is an ensemble of Baroque and Pombaline azulejos. This brings together two aspects: the age of the building and the design of its tiled interiors. Baroque and Pombaline are the two named art-historical classifications of the ensemble. For travellers interested in architecture and craftsmanship, the Vila offers a specific point of reference that can be described in terms of both its dating and its interior decoration. You can give these two aspects different emphasis when planning the cultural focus of your stay.

Sacred Art at the Igreja de SĂŁo Miguel

The Igreja de São Miguel de Queijas was inaugurated in 1986. Inside is a six-metre-high Resurrection panel by the painter Vítor Lages. There are also five paintings in different colours depicting various stages of the life of Jesus Christ. A single large-scale motif thus sits alongside a series of five depictions distinguished by colour. The artworks offer two different points of entry: the theme of the Resurrection in the panel and the depiction of various stages of life in the paintings. Together with the year of inauguration, the artist’s name, the panel’s height and the subjects depicted provide a specific context for an interest in religious art in Queijas.

Monument and Events

The Monumento S. Miguel Arcanjo was inaugurated on 26 September 1999 at the entrance roundabout of Queijas. The date and location help distinguish the monument from the Igreja de SĂŁo Miguel de Queijas: these are two distinct named landmarks, both bearing the name SĂŁo Miguel.

The Festas em Honra de SĂŁo Miguel Arcanjo is a festival in Queijas in honour of the Archangel Michael. The Milha de Queijas has a different focus: its competitive format consists of one lap of a closed course measuring 1,609 metres; later editions may use a different route. The Sub 14 age group is set to run 1,000 metres, while the Sub 12 and Sub 10 groups cover 500 metres on the same course. The Sub 14 distance is therefore twice as long as the distances set for Sub 12 and Sub 10. If a festival or the race is the reason for your trip, check the dates for the year you plan to visit in advance and, for the Milha, confirm the format of that particular edition.
