The Real Edifício de Mafra brings together a palace, basilica, monastery, Jardim do Cerco and Tapada. Since July 2019, the ensemble has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Real Edifício is an extraordinary example of Italian Baroque and one of the most significant buildings commissioned by King João V. A special feature of the basilica at the Palácio Nacional de Mafra is its globally unique ensemble of six pipe organs. The instruments were designed to be played together and were built between 1792 and 1807 by Portuguese organ builders António Machado e Cerveira and Joaquim Peres Fontanes. Their shared design and clearly defined construction period give the site a tangible connection to music history.

The library of the Palácio Nacional de Mafra holds a carefully selected collection of about 30,000 volumes. It is considered an expression of Enlightenment knowledge and courtly culture in the first half of the 18th century. The Igreja de Santo André offers a different architectural accent: it is one of the most significant examples of Gothic parish architecture. Mafra thus brings a Baroque palace complex and organs together with distinctive Gothic church architecture.

Jardim do Cerco through the seasons

The eight-hectare Jardim do Cerco adds a Baroque garden to the architectural ensemble, with pools, wide paths, shade trees and cascades. Its century-old water-raising wheel system is still working, too. Admission is free. From October to March, the garden is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; from April to September, it is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Visiting hours are therefore two hours longer in the summer half of the year. Landscape and activities in the Tapada

The Tapada Nacional de Mafra covers more than 800 hectares. Its diverse natural habitat is home to several species, including deer, wild boar, foxes and birds of prey. Activities associated with the Tapada include hiking, mountain biking and horse riding, as well as archery and crossbow shooting. Check in advance which of these activities are available during your visit. This lets you distinguish the focus on nature and activities from a visit to the palace complex, rather than combining both aspects into a single item on your itinerary.

Near Mafra, Aldeia Típica José Franco recreates former workshops and shops, showcasing the customs and working practices of rural life in the Mafra region. A playful area features miniature fields, carpentry workshops, windmills, chapels, grocery stores, schools and wine cellars. Ericeira’s fishing traditions are also represented. This adds scenes of rural everyday life and regional traditions to the courtly and religious architecture.

Further afield from Mafra, wolves can be observed under special conditions from observation towers at the Centro de Recuperação do Lobo Ibérico (CRLI), at Quinta da Murta near Gradil.
