Pedreiras brings together architectural and craft history with trails at the foot of the Serra dos Candeeiros. Igreja Antiga, Moinho das Pedreiras, and the Casa Féteira olive oil mill each represent different aspects of local life; two distinct types of route also lead into the surrounding landscape. When planning a stay, you can choose cultural history and outdoor activity as separate areas of focus.
Church, Mills and Local History
Construction of Igreja Antiga began in 1602, and it was completed in 1604. The centuries-old, large oak trees in the churchyard of the parish of Pedreiras gave rise to the Feira dos Carvalhos. A dated building and a festival linked to the churchyard oaks thus stand side by side as two historical points of reference.
Moinho das Pedreiras is one of the working windmills in the municipality of Porto de Mós; traditional grain processing into flour using millstones is still possible there. It belongs to a tradition of windmills on the hills, associated with rural craftspeople and their knowledge. A different type of mill is represented by the Casa Féteira olive oil mill in Pedreiras, which dates from 1912.
In January 2025, a municipal workshop explored the history, professions, and arts of Pedreiras. Two theoretical presentations focused on different topics: Kevin Carreira Soares gave “A HistĂłria das Pedreiras atravĂ©s dos seus documentos” about the history of Pedreiras through its documents; LuĂsa Machado presented “Cerâmica de Pedreiras: evolução dos tipos, seus vidrados e decoração” on the development of ceramic types, glazes, and decoration.
Walking Trails and Pilgrimage Route
The PR5 PMS – Percurso da Serra dos Candeeiros is a circular walking route that begins in the village of Pedreiras. It starts beside Parque de Campismo de Pedreiras and passes through farmland, olive groves, orchards, and woodland along the foot of the Serra dos Candeeiros. The route can therefore be understood both by its circular layout and by the transition between cultivated land and woodland.
The second stage of the Caminhos de Fátima, a 15 km route starting from Pedreiras, offers a different kind of trail. It goes north around the Serra dos Candeeiros, through the main village of the municipality, and then south past the depression of Fórnea and the depression of Alvados. The Caminhos de Fátima connect the Marian shrines of Nazaré and Fátima and are divided into three stages. The difference between a circular walking route and a pilgrimage stage is therefore a clear basis for choosing between the routes, as are their respective paths: changing landscapes at the foot of the Serra on one, and a northbound section followed by a southbound one on the other.
Practical Information
Parque de Campismo das Pedreiras is set in natural surroundings next to a picnic area, a Circuito de Manutenção, and a windmill. Access to the park must be arranged in advance with the Junta de Freguesia de Pedreiras; take this step before your planned visit. When it opened in 2022, the Circuito de Manutenção – Pedreiras was described as having 14 stations and three difficulty levels. If you plan to use it, check in advance whether it is available.
