Santa Eufémia offers two distinct ways to explore the area: the history of archaeological discoveries and the landscape of Vale do Lapedo. Abrigo do Lagar Velho and the PR1 Rota do Vale do Lapedo give these themes specific names. If you would like to combine culture with time outdoors, you can plan the two separately rather than assume a fixed daily itinerary. This leaves room to tailor your visit to your interests: learning about a discovery or following the route through the landscape.
The discovery and its context
The archaeological site of Abrigo do Lagar Velho lies in Vale do Lapedo and was classified as a National Monument in 2013. The site contains a child’s grave from the Upper Palaeolithic, known as Menino do Lapedo. The grave is considered the only known human burial from this period on the entire Iberian Peninsula. CIALV – Centro de Interpretação do Abrigo do Lagar Velho presents the research findings from the site and places them in the broader context of human evolution. To understand the subject, it is helpful to distinguish between the two: the grave represents the specific archaeological feature, while CIALV presents the research and broader context.
CIALV opening hours
CIALV is open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 09:30 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 17:30. These two time slots make it easier to schedule a visit to the centre separately from other plans for the day. Check the opening hours again before your trip, before using them as the basis for your plans.
Route and landscape of Vale do Lapedo
The PR1 Rota do Vale do Lapedo runs across limestone slopes, along waterways and through Mediterranean woodland. The route connects Parque Verde do Vale do Lapedo with CIALV and Menino do Lapedo. This provides a clear link between the leisure area and the archaeological theme, while the route can also be planned as a separate focus on nature and activity. Vale do Lapedo features a gorge-like valley that cuts through a limestone massif and has been eroded by Ribeira do Sirol over hundreds of thousands of years. The landscape and the history of the discovery offer two distinct perspectives on this area: the route describes the way, while the archaeological details describe the discovery and its context.
Parque Verde: facilities and directions
Parque Verde do Vale do Lapedo in Lapedo – Santa Eufémia is right next to CIALV. The park has a picnic area, play and leisure facilities, and a water basin. There is parking for several dozen vehicles beside the picnic area. The turn-off to the park is at kilometre 8.2 of the EN350; following infrastructure changes, check the access point on site. Being so close together means that the park and CIALV can be treated as separate, neighbouring destinations when planning your visit.
Another point in history
Another cultural point of interest is Igreja de Santa Eufémia de Leiria. It was built on 30 January 1966 and inaugurated on 8 December 1968. In contrast to the Upper Palaeolithic grave, these are evidence from different periods: an archaeological discovery on the one hand, and the construction and inauguration of a church on the other, with precisely stated dates. This distinction in chronology keeps the different cultural themes separate.
