Discover Alvaiázere through a range of themes: trails pass through olive groves and forests, follow rivers or lead to archaeological sites. The area also offers a striking karst landscape, museum exhibitions and dishes made with Chícharos. When planning your trip, you can explore these themes individually or combine them according to your interests.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The PR 1 AVZ – Por trilhos de Al-Baizir is a 9.3-kilometre circular trail that takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes to walk. The route passes through oak forests and olive groves, past stands of aromatic plants and through areas where wild orchids grow. It therefore brings together several of the landscape features described for Alvaiázere.

Other trail descriptions have their own highlights: the PR 5 AVZ – Percurso da Ribeira do Tordo follows the river, passes the ruins of watermills and reaches the Olho do Tordo spring. The PR 7 AVZ – Rota Dona Maria runs along the right bank of the Ribeira de Foz de Alge to the area of the Ribeira de Foz de Alge river beach. The Rota Carmelita passes through Alvaiázere and forms part of a 111-kilometre route from the Carmelo de Santa Teresa in Coimbra to the Santuário de Fátima.

Archaeological sites also shape the choice of route. The GR 35 AVZ – Grande Rota de Alvaiázere follows an old Roman road to the megalithic complex of Ramalhal. The Ramalhal area includes monuments dating back around 5,000 years. Those interested in pilgrimage routes will find another connection on the PR 8 AVZ – Rota dos Cântaros e das Rodilhas: it crosses the Caminho de Santiago and passes through the Sicó-Alvaiázere Site of Community Importance.

Karst landscape and nature

Well-watered floodplains and towering limestone formations give Alvaiázere a varied landscape. The plants mentioned include pines, Portuguese oaks, holm oaks, cork oaks, centuries-old olive trees and wild orchids. Serra de Alvaiázere is the highest point of the Sicó Massif. A distinctive landform is the Fórnea do Bofinho: this hollow, typical of karst areas, contains a well-maintained olive grove.

The Parque Botânico da Mata do Carrascal is a protected area covering 14.73 hectares. In the broader regional context, Alvaiázere is part of the Terras de Sicó, a region with geological, archaeological, architectural and ethnographic heritage. Nature and cultural experiences can thus be considered different aspects of the same trip planning, without combining them into a single outing.

Archaeology and the museum

The archaeological evidence spans different periods: Serra de Alvaiázere is home to a Bronze Age settlement, while the Rominha area has a Roman villa. The Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Covões dates from the 18th century. At the Museu Municipal de Alvaiázere, the exhibition “Conduzidos pelo Tempo” explores the district’s archaeology and the settlement of the area from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. “Tempo, Espaço e Memória” focuses on traditional occupations that shaped Alvaiázere up to the middle of the 20th century.

The museum is open Monday to Saturday. In winter, it is open from 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday; in summer, from 10:00 to 18:00. It is open from 11:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays year-round and closed on Sundays and public holidays. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Chícharos and a special visit

In Alvaiázere, Chícharos are prepared in a variety of ways, including as a purée and as a side dish with meat, cured meats and fish, especially grilled sardines and cod. The production of Farinheira de Chícharo also follows a described sequence: after three days of curing, hot water and Chícharo flour are added; the sausage is then stuffed and smoked. Product availability may change.

The Valle D’Encanto Disc Golf Park opened in 2025. Access is restricted because there are animals on the course; to visit or play, you must contact the park in advance to arrange an appointment.
