In Vermiosa, a very long history of settlement and tangible architectural evidence are part of the village’s character. A large number of anthropomorphic tombs attests to the settlement’s great age. These are complemented by the Igreja Matriz de Vermiosa, a house with architectural features dating from the 16th century, and a three-arched bridge over the Ribeira de Aguiar. Winegrowing is also shaped by vineyards with different planting years, grape varieties and cultivation methods.

Church, Tombs and Historic Architectural Features

The Igreja Matriz de Vermiosa is mentioned in the Tombo da Beira of 1395. Its sacristy ceiling is decorated with 18th-century paintings. At the Casa do Juiz, a door and a window dating from the 16th century have been preserved. The dates therefore refer to different details: 1395 to the mention of the church, the 18th century to its ceiling paintings, and the 16th century to the door and window of the Casa do Juiz.

Together with the anthropomorphic tombs, these features offer several distinct ways to explore Vermiosa’s past. The Chafarizes are also among the village’s places of interest. Early traces of settlement thus stand alongside later ecclesiastical and architectural details, without reducing the village’s history to a single building.

The Roman Bridge and the Ribeira de Aguiar

On the road between Vermiosa and Escarigo, the Roman Bridge, with its three arches, connects the two banks of the Ribeira de Aguiar. Its location and form can be described precisely: the bridge lies on the road between the two villages and spans the river with three arches. This makes it a distinct historic point of reference, alongside the church and settlement traces in the village.

A historical description of the PR1 FCR walking trail also names Vermiosa as a place of interest. If you are planning a hike, check the trail’s current status beforehand. This keeps the trail’s historical connection separate from the practical question of whether a route is currently available.

Winegrowing with Different Planting Years

The vineyards around Vermiosa differ in location, age and cultivation. Vinha do Pombal was planted in 2011 beside Adega Beyra in the village. It is cultivated without irrigation and using organic methods. Organic cultivation and the absence of irrigation are also specified for Vinha da Santa Maria. Vinha do Cadaval has a different focus: planted exclusively with Tinta Roriz in 2001, it faces east and south.

At Quinta de Vale de Espinho, almost six hectares are covered with hundred-year-old vines planted in 1903. Quinta do Serro was established in 2003 beside the village of Vermiosa. Its elevated location offers 360-degree views. Vinha do Pombal is located in the Freguesia de Vermiosa, in the Concelho de Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, within the Douro catchment area and the Parque Natural do Douro Internacional. These details place the vineyard both within its municipality and in a wider landscape.

A tasting room and a wine tourism area were inaugurated at Adega Beyra. If you plan to visit, check in advance what visitor options are currently available. The vineyards’ specific features also offer a different way to explore the region than its historic buildings: here, planting years, grape varieties and cultivation methods take centre stage.

Dates to Help Plan Your Trip

The Festa do Divino Santo Cristo takes place in Vermiosa in August. Check the dates before your trip if the festival is important to your plans. The same applies to the PR1 FCR route description: Vermiosa’s earlier mention as a place of interest does not replace checking the trail’s current status.

Whether you focus your travel plans on the ancient settlement traces, architectural history, winegrowing or a possible hike, Vermiosa offers specific, distinct themes to explore. By including several of them, you can see the village’s history and winegrowing characteristics as different perspectives on the same place.
