There are several ways to explore Monte Gordo during your stay: Praia de Monte Gordo, the Caminhos no Pinhal trails between the town and Vila Real de Santo António, and the town’s history of fishing, tourism development and the Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Dores. The beach, trails and history offer different highlights. You can choose which ones to focus on according to your interests, rather than treating them as a single itinerary.
Praia de Monte Gordo and Visitor Facilities
Praia de Monte Gordo has visitor facilities including play areas, restaurants and terraces. You can combine time at the beach with dining or a break on a terrace; the play areas are another part of the facilities. When choosing where to spend time, you can take this mix into account as part of your possible daily routine.
Caminhos no Pinhal: Multiple Trails, Different Terrain Profiles
The Caminhos no Pinhal are located between Vila Real de Santo António and Monte Gordo. They comprise several trails on unpaved surfaces, with a total length of 12,500 metres. This figure refers to the trails combined, so their location and terrain profile are also useful when choosing a route.
North of the road between the two towns, the trails are mostly flat; to the south, there are some ramps. This lets you distinguish between two terrain profiles rather than looking only at the total length. The Caminhos no Pinhal are designated as freely accessible trails. If the current trail conditions are important for your visit, check them locally.
A Regional Perspective: the Ecovia do Litoral
The Ecovia do Litoral offers a different perspective: it is about 214 kilometres long and connects Cabo de São Vicente with Vila Real de Santo António. By contrast, the Caminhos no Pinhal comprise several trails between Vila Real de Santo António and Monte Gordo, with a combined length of 12,500 metres.
Fishing Village and Tourism Development
Monte Gordo was originally a fishing village. The town underwent significant tourism development in the 1960s.
The history of fishing is also reflected in specific legal transactions. D. Duarte transferred to Infante D. Henrique the rights to the “dízima nova” on all fish caught in the sea off Monte Gordo. In 1497, D. Manuel granted the fishermen of Monte Gordo the privilege of having the judge of Castro Marim as their own judge. The town’s history therefore encompasses not only fishing, but also matters of taxation and jurisdiction.
Church and Festival Tradition
The present-day Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Dores stands on the remains of an earlier temple that was buried by shifting sands. The church is considered very old and may be as old as the settlement of Monte Gordo.
The festival in honour of Nossa Senhora das Dores is usually celebrated annually from 4 to 15 September. It includes a procession at sea, with the patron saint carried on dozens of fishing boats. The exact programme may vary; check the dates before your trip.
