Two Manueline holy water fonts, a reconstructed mill, and circular trails with clearly different distances and durations offer different ways to focus a trip to Budens. Nearby, there is also a wetland, coastal villages, and a biodiversity trail. You can explore architecture and local history as well as hiking and landscapes.

Church Art and Historic Architectural Features

The Igreja de São Sebastião is a single-nave church dating from the 16th century and dedicated to Saint Sebastian. It contains two elaborately carved Manueline holy water fonts from that century. The portal bears the date 1762 and is considered one of the finest examples of 18th-century sculpture in the Algarve. The church’s construction date, fonts, and portal thus reflect different periods in its history.

The Moinho da Torre shows a different architectural form: the stone structure is circular, has two storeys, and walls up to 95 centimetres thick. The mill operated until 1958, was reconstructed in the 21st century, and remains fully functional. The details clearly distinguish its earlier period of operation from its later reconstruction; its shape and wall thickness also offer concrete points of reference for appreciating its architecture.

Everyday history and architectural details also come together at Fonte Milenar. The rectangular livestock trough is made of red sandstone, and marks left by sharpening axe blades can be seen on it. A few dozen metres to the south are Roman basins that were probably part of a thermal complex. The spring is accessible on foot, by bicycle, and by car.

Religious Buildings and Their History

The Ermida de Santo António stands on the edge of the village of Budens, in a church square with a staircase. It was probably built in the 17th century and affiliated with the parish of Budens. A tiled vault is located above the altar area. The Capela de Santo António was once an important place of worship for local residents; in earlier times, it was used for baptisms and weddings. This historical use should be distinguished from any claim about activities today.

Comparing Two Circular Trails

The two circular trails described differ in length, stated duration, and difficulty level. The PR8 VBP Trilho dos Dinossauros is 10 kilometres long, takes 3 hours and 10 minutes, and is rated moderate. At 14 kilometres and five hours, the PR7 VBP Trilho dos Romanos e dos Piratas is longer, but is rated easy. When weighing up the options, therefore, it is worth looking beyond distance alone: the longer trail has the easier rating, while the shorter one is rated moderate.

Wetland, Coast and Biodiversity

Near Budens lies the wetland of Paul da Lontreira, also known as Paul de Budens, which covers around 134 hectares. It is named after the otters found there. The mouths of the three watercourses Ribeira de Vale Barão, Ribeira de Vale de Boi, and Ribeira de Budens are located at Praia da Boca do Rio; the wetland known as Paul da Lontreira formed there.

The Estação da Biodiversidade da Boca do Rio also begins at Praia da Boca do Rio. It is a circular walking trail approximately two kilometres long. Information boards provide field-guide-style information about some of the animals and plants found there. The trail complements the two longer circular routes with a shorter route whose approximate distance is explicitly stated, and a focus on biodiversity.

Other nearby destinations have their own highlights: the Ruínas do Forte de São Luís de Almádena were built in 1632 to protect the tuna fishery at the neighbouring Praia da Boca do Rio. At the western end of Praia da Salema, a clearly visible path of dinosaur footprints can be seen on a slab at the foot of the beach stairs. Praia das Furnas is named after the coastal caves in its limestone cliffs and lies entirely within Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina.

This gives you a range of interests to consider when planning: churches and mills for architectural and local history, circular trails with specific duration and difficulty ratings, and coastal and wetland landscapes.
