In São Brás de Alportel, cork can be encountered in several ways: as a processed material, as part of a centuries-old relationship between people and trees, and as the subject of a dedicated route. The permanent exhibition Terra de Cortiça displays cork slabs from different stages in the life of the trees, along with tools. A video lasting about eight minutes introduces the preparation and processing of cork. In this way, the material, the work processes and the tools are brought together in the exhibition.

The Rota da Cortiça offers a different perspective on this subject. It explores the centuries-old relationship between people and cork oaks. The permanent exhibition Veículos de Tração Animal also displays traditional animal-drawn vehicles adapted for leisure, travel and work. The two exhibitions have different focuses: cork and its processing in one, vehicles and their many uses in the other.

The history of architecture can also be read in specific details. The Museu do Traje de São Brás de Alportel occupies an area of 5,000 m² and is housed in a manor house dating from the late 19th century. It is surrounded by former domestic, agricultural and water-related infrastructure. The manor house preserves an example of rural Algarve architecture from the same period: Neo-Arab lines and horseshoe-arched doors give the building its distinctive architectural features.

The Igreja Matriz de São Brás de Alportel brings together spatial design and furnishings. The church has a longitudinal plan with three naves and five bays. Its distinctive features include an 18th-century Baroque baptismal font with a marble altarpiece, considered unique in the Algarve. The combination of the floor plan, its date and its regional context makes this another way to explore the region’s architecture.

The Palácio Episcopal was built between the 17th and 18th centuries for the bishops of the Algarve. Its historic setting includes a garden in the centre of the town, beside the municipal outdoor swimming pools; the palace served as the bishops’ summer residence. The monumental portal Porta da Zona Rural do Palácio Episcopal also tells part of the place’s later history: it has a triangular pediment and an inscription dating from 1903.

The streets and squares of São Brás de Alportel offer a tour through the town’s urban development. An important landmark in the history of its road connections is Casa Memória da EN2, at Largo de São Sebastião, where Estrada Regional 270 and Estrada Nacional 2 intersect. In Aldeia Típica de Alportel, narrow cobbled streets, chimneys, ovens, whitewashed walls, courtyards and stone seating terraces shape the rural character of the village.

The Festa das Tochas Floridas includes a procession on Easter Sunday, celebrating the resurrection of Christ. Men carry flower-decorated torches in two rows. The festival takes place every year on Easter Sunday in São Brás de Alportel; the calendar date changes according to the date of Easter. The programme also includes the Encontro de Sons e Sabores, held in the square in front of the Igreja Matriz from 3 p.m. There is music and poetry, as well as awards for traditional and elaborate torches and blankets. The programme may vary from one edition to another.

Another recurring event is the Feira da Serra, held every year on the last weekend of July in São Brás de Alportel. The exact dates vary from year to year; check the dates when planning your trip. Local food and drink also reflect distinct traditions: sweets include figos cheios and the typical Amêndoas de São Brás. Traditional drinks from the region include Aguardente de Medronho and carob liqueur.

Beyond the town, trails lead through rural and mountainous landscapes. The Várzea da Cova trail is part of the 28-kilometre circular route Passeio Pedestre no Vale, which passes through rural places with a distinctive microclimate. Check the trail information before setting out. The 20-kilometre mountain-bike route from São Brás de Alportel passes through mountain landscapes with sudden descents and steep climbs. The different lengths and route profiles provide useful points of reference for choosing between the two trails.

Craftsmanship is another part of the town’s cultural offerings. Casa do Artesão opened on 20 January 2018 and is located in the historic centre of the town. It forms part of the Centro de Artes e Ofícios at Largo do Mercado, also known as “Barreira”. Casa do Artesão runs craft workshops; the programme may vary. These hands-on activities complement the architectural, rural and festive aspects of São Brás de Alportel.
