Landscape and Birdlife

In the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, the landscape brings together uplands, the Barrocal region and wetlands of high ecological value. Ria de Alvor is close to Mexilhoeira Grande and is home to diverse fauna and flora, as well as numerous bird species that occur there year-round. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a broad picture: different landscape types within the parish and a nearby estuary with its wildlife and plant life.

Quinta da Rocha, in the Ria de Alvor estuary, is a birdwatching site where around 300 bird species are sighted over the course of the year. The two descriptions of nature have different scopes: the Ria is described as having bird species present year-round, while the Quinta is associated with an approximate number over the course of the year. This distinguishes a broad appreciation of nature from a dedicated birdwatching focus.

Cultural History and Architecture

The Roman villa of Quinta da Abicada was inhabited from the 2nd to the 5th century AD. This long period gives it a different historical emphasis from the religious buildings. The Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Passos in Mexilhoeira Grande is a small Baroque devotional chapel; the Igreja Matriz da Mexilhoeira Grande combines Manueline and Renaissance styles. The chapel is described in terms of its architectural form, while the Matriz brings two styles together. For the villa, the reference point is its occupation over several centuries; for the churches, the focus is on their form and style.

At the Igreja da Misericórdia de Mexilhoeira Grande, the focus is on a precise architectural detail: above its main door is a rectangular window, topped by a royal crown. This directs attention to the arrangement on the façade, rather than only to an architectural style. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Verde is a 16th-century ruin with Manueline influences; its condition and stylistic influences go hand in hand.

The Monumentos Megalíticos de Alcalar are classified as a national monument. The Centro de Interpretação de Alcalar at the Museu de Portimão provides information about these monuments. This offers two different points of interest: the monument’s status and an information resource about its history.

Hiking and Local Tradition

From Mexilhoeira Grande railway station, the town is connected to Via Algarviana in Monchique by a 25 km signposted hiking trail. Its length makes this a distinct hiking highlight alongside the historical attractions. It is particularly appealing as a hiking option for travel plans where the route itself matters, rather than serving merely as a short walk between other activities.

Destilaria Cabeço da Eira was founded in 2014 by Pedro Jesus in the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande and is part of the local tradition of distilling medronho spirit. The specific distillery, its founding year and the distilling tradition add a craft dimension alongside the landscape, architecture and hiking. Medronho distilling thus complements the natural and architectural heritage with another connection to local culture.
