Discover Castro Marim from three different perspectives: fortified history, salt-making traditions and nature watching. The Castelo de Castro Marim and other historic buildings add cultural highlights, while the Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim e Vila Real de Santo António offers a distinct focus on nature. As you plan your trip, you can weigh these themes according to your interests and take their different timeframes into account.

Castle, fort and chapel

The Castelo de Castro Marim stands on a hill on the right bank of the Guadiana. The seat of the Order of Santiago was probably located there from 1319 to 1356. Construction of the Forte de São Sebastião is believed to have begun in 1641 during the Restoration War with Spain. Its walled complex includes five bastions.

The Revelim de Santo António also combines a military function with a religious building: it was used to monitor the course of the Guadiana. Inside is a Baroque chapel dedicated to Santo António. Together, the three buildings offer different points of historical reference—from the uncertain medieval history of the order and the stated start of construction of the fort to the chapel and the function of the Revelim.

Salt-making traditions and local culture

The Casa do Sal is housed in a restored former local warehouse known locally as “Balalaica.” It includes a promotional area for products from Castro Marim’s traditional salt industry. The building thus represents both the history of the structure and an important local theme: salt production.

The Mercado Local has a broader focus. It is a multifunctional tourism and cultural venue that promotes local arts and knowledge, as well as a key place to showcase regional products from the Concelho de Castro Marim. By comparison, the Casa do Sal focuses on products from the salt industry, while the Mercado Local also features other local arts and knowledge.

The festivities in honour of Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, the patron saint of Castro Marim, take place on 15 August. If this date matters for your trip, check the specific event dates in advance. The salt works operate seasonally; visits can be arranged in advance. Arrange a visit before your trip.

Nature watching and routes

The Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim e Vila Real de Santo António was the first area on mainland Portugal to be declared a nature reserve. White storks, flamingos and black-winged stilts can be observed there throughout the year. This offers a different timeframe from the festivities on 15 August: these bird species can be observed year-round, whereas the festivities are tied to a specific date.

Routes also include the GR15 Grande Rota do Guadiana. If you want to make a route a focus of your trip, you can include its name in your plans. The Centro de Interpretação do Território welcomes visitors and also serves as a starting point for excursions and sightseeing in the Concelho de Castro Marim and the Baixo Guadiana. Its role can help you find your bearings if you are considering visits beyond the sights in Castro Marim, in this wider area.
